This is the problem that we can't really address. Those two cops were cordial and nice to a guy who was driving a car so drunk that he didn't even know where he was. This politeness was interpreted as weakness by the man who would later think that he could fight the police and win. If you make it clear to someone that you don't want a confrontation, then you are inviting them to make that choice for you. Weakness invites an attack.

The alternative is not nice, by necessity. If they had shown up screamed at him, pulled him out of his car and slammed him into cuffs as soon as it was obvious (from the jump) that he was passed out drunk behind the wheel of a running automobile, then he would have naturally cowered like a child. They would have sent the correct signal that they were in charge and he was in trouble. The fact that they were buddy-buddy with him for nearly half an hour is what made him disregard their authority enough to put him into a life and death struggle.

A very good friend is half Okinawan and half Japanese. Okinawans are considered a lesser hairier race in Japan.

Slight powerlevel, but: I was one of those "you don't need an uzi to go hunting" guys. Now I'm one of those "how many SAM's is too many for one person" guys.

(I know, the answer is "nobody's had that many yet." The point is: there is still hope.)
