Kojima had the unenviable task of tying up the story of the series without it being a train crashing into a nuclear plant. That the biggest issue people have with it is that everything gets handwaved with nanomachines is a massive accomplishment.

For me, Spec Ops worked because it started as a generic 'Murica Fuck Yeah shoot the brown people game with characters you'd never met before so had no idea of their past. LoU2 on the other hand looks like it's just doing bad things for the sake of being shocking.

I finally told everyone I know that I read the spoilers and I don't recommend they buy the game, without mentioning the spoilers. One ignored my warnings and is still looking forward to it because she fucking loved the first game; I'm now eagerly looking forward to her freakout regarding Joel's death.

Imagine the dimensions of a locker being carved into concrete, with a blastproof steel door. Forced to stay on his feet with nothing but his garbage thoughts to keep him company and maybe a bag of liquid food stuck up his nose (if he wants it, he could always starve and save the State a few bucks.)
You don't even get to go outside. You get an hour under a uv lamp in a windowless concrete cube to stretch (again, if he wants, he can waive it, then we just turn the lamp off and he can stay in the dark.) Then, back on to the wall.
You know the world goes on without you, but you'll never see it. Not one of the guards calls you by name. You get no visits. You cease to exist.
Eventually, when some other scumbag needs to take your spot, the guards stop coming and he's left there to scream and beg and starve.

My sibling who I warned and also read the spoiler anyway is still getting it too. He knows about Joel's death and Ellie's beatdown but he still wants to see how it plays out anyway.
If nothing else I can get the perspective of someone close to me who is a fan of the first game as they play through it the first time.

I stopped playing a bit after the White Phosphorous scene, they may be digital but I saved both of my squadmates' lives by doing so.

The Last of Us: Part II is an emotionally taxing game, especially so when its themes weigh particularly heavy on you when you're playing it.
