We should revisit the idea of banning sequels. Sequels used to be seen as unwanted and pointless. We should return.

Because the first game was a hit so they trusted and believed. And Sequels often feel the need to be BIGGER! So we get more of the wankery which was present in the development and reception of the first game but dialed up to 11.

Look at Human Head's Prey from 2006, back before the great big diversity pushes. That game's somewhat forgotten about especially since the sequel was sadly canned thanks to internal politics at Bethesda and their relationship with Human Head. But it was an example of a diverse character/setting done right. You're a Native American burnt out at living a dead end life at a shithole highway bar run by his family on the reservation. The first 5-10 minutes of the game involve your character hating his life there and wanting to escape it, feeling like his heritage is holding him back and the chief (IIRC) trying to convince him his heritage is important. Then UFOs hit, the bar gets sucked up by the alien spacecraft, and the chief is brutally killed by said aliens. You then end up discovering Native American powers that not only end up becoming a core gameplay mechanic but the writing also involves the protagonist actually discovering his heritage and faith with said mechanic.

They actually reached out to Native Americans and took notes on their culture, and had them voice act the main characters. The game ended up being perhaps one of the most unique takes on a culture that's mostly depicted as "Cowboys and Indians" and that's what makes that game stand out. It helped that the game you know, had good gameplay/graphics as well to appeal to a mainstream audience. You don't see games with writing like that anymore, instead you get shit like ME:A's "I'm Trans" character instead or itch.io games whining about how life sucks.
