Not only is the Von Braun stylized per deck, with exploration served by limited access and keys across industrial access and living quarters, but the structured layout of the Von Braun is a stark contrast to the organic madness of the Rickenbacker. If you removed all enemies and gunplay along with the audio logs/cinematics, you would still have a serviceable maze/exploration game going from deck to deck between the two ships, especially with the clever platforming in the (what I think I remember was) the bulkhead and hangars leading up to the Rickenbacker. Excellent use of the z-axis in level design. The tech look and comfy factor of that game's audio ambiance and textures makes the ship come alive in a way that Star Trek and Babylon 5 set designers wish they could achieve. Then you have to acknowledge that with enemies and no story, the level design pops by having "farmable" areas for ammo/credit/respawn/recovery loops to strengthen and make up for player's choices in the stat trees. Then you have level design where you come to expect these safe ways to explore, and you begin to come across safety 'deserts' where only the enemies respawn and the ammo and recovery stops being liberal, building tension and anxiety. SS2 is a game where multiple game layers strongly exist separate from one another, and end up reinforcing each other into an amazing title that stands the test of time.
