TLOU2 seems overall tragic going by Abby's story and what happens to Ellie at the end. But unlike Chirin, you can't really feel sorry for Abby. Because she just comes out of nowhere, uses Joel's head for putting practice and is not an established character with a backstory you can get into. I never played the first game but it looks like Abby is brand new and the doctor Joel kills will actually scalpel him to death as part of a scripted event if you don't act first. Therefore the doctor's death should be seen as self defense.

The important difference here is that in your example, Chirin still attains his revenge. He kills the wolf that killed his mother and only after does he realize how destructive it all was. Ellie doesn't succeed in killing Abby and yet Dinah leaves her and she can't play her guitar anymore. She doesn't even attain her ultimate goal and she still loses. Sure, Dinah begs Ellie not to go, but without Ellie actually killing Abby the message can't go through. It comes off as dumb and contrived.

And on Abby's side of things, you're right, she isn't developed enough for us to care. Her backstory is a joke and undermines the importance of the first game's climax. You could argue that she's seeing the effects of her revenge considering Ellie starts killing her friends, but the problem is the game's already setting itself against her by having her murder Joel. You want to see Abby get punished, especially after she murders a beloved character. The player is more invested in seeing Ellie defeat her than seeing Abby achieve a goal that's hastily thrown together at best. Even if it's supposed to be a subversion a la Chirin no Suzu, the way the game handles Abby is just plain misguided.

I think they had a real Catch-22 with Abby. They couldn’t just let the character be.a bull dyke cis woman, but making Abby trans is going to make troons unhappy because she’s not a super hot femme fatal babe that they think all trans should be depicted as.

Abby looks like a dude with prepubescent tits. Reminds me of the horrifying Richard Speck titty party tapes from prison.

For interest sake I will watch a walkthrough on YouTube see if it really is as bad as it sounds but even just form the article I read it seems like even some who called it the best game ever made have some major issues with it.

Nah it's just AAA western titles are fucking overblown and overrated. Imagine playing video games in 2020 that aren't in-house Nintendo titles or indie passion projects made by a single dude in his basement.

EDIT: No Patrick, Pokemon is not an in-house Nintendo title.
