The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

People will buy whatever game they put out next. They'll show it at E3 running on the PS5 and everyone will talk about how it's literally the greatest game ever made and how the graphics are amazing. Just like everyone will forget about Fallout 76 and Red Dead Online once Bethesda and Rockstar announce their new games.

Hell, there's still people hyped for Dragon Age 4!

I feel like people overestimate the influence the internet has on AAA video game sales. BFV was shat on for over a year and it still sold about 8 million copies by the end of 2018 lmao. 8 million copies for the worst Battlefield game ever made lmao. Consoomers gonna consoom.

I think Druckmann's working on a Last of Us show with HBO alongside the guy who did Chernobyl. If that ends up good, that'd probably repair the brand's image. Apparently, the show covers the events of the first game and they've discussed possibly later seasons going into the events of the second game. So I think there's a possibility that the show could rectify some of the game's mistakes.

Either way, I'm just not convinced that people aren't going to soy face and gobble whatever Sony throws their way if Naughty Dog shows up at E3 2026 and announces Last of Us 3.
The shows focus is going to be on “climate change” and “rape culture”, so....

The game will probably still sell like 20 million copies though lmao
I predict 8 million, which will still be a nice profit.

There's no way it's going to out-sell part 1, not with this terrible word of mouth. The only reason I bought part 1 (my opinion of TLOU1: it was fine) is because it came with my PS4. I WON'T be buying any PS5 that comes with TLOU2. I can't be alone.

But as I've said before, I expect strong sales during the first week with many pre-orders and people who avoided spoilers. There was too much goodwill from the first game for this one to fail.

IDK it's hard to tell what are good and bad sales with consoomers anymore. They make up all sorts of shit to justify their opinions. I know for the longest time I saw people say if a game didnt sell GTA V numbers it was shit until one of their precious Sony exclusives only sold a couple million then it was good cause they were reboots or new IPs or whatever.

RDR2's story might have problems like the characters being stupid, unnecessary railroading, the pacing occasionally being way off, and having more than a few continuity errors with it and the first game, but those are nothing compared to the clusterfuck of issues in the TLoU2. Honestly, they're not even comparable.

I don't think this game is doin' that great, it's like, 9th place on amazon's game section, getting it's ass kicked by gift cards and way older shit.

Amazon's got different best sellers based on region. Like Amazon.au, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.sg, etc. From what I can tell, it's the top selling game item in most regions. The lowest I could find were Amazon.com where it was fourth and Amazon Japan where it was third.

I was pretty surprised to see that the game was the top seller in regions like Mexico, India, and Brazil tbh. I thought the culture over there was pretty conservative.

Honestly the only way to save this franchise is for Sony to immediately seize control of development, send it to another non-pozzed studio they own (just like Jak or Crash Bandicoot), and have them work 24-7 on a free epilogue 'DLC' that retcons the entire game as a fever dream sequence.

That takes the edge off, and allows them to sort of possibly set up for a triumphant 'return' maybe a few years later.

They have to do it fast, because TLoU is quickly going from a respectable franchise, to a mocked one.
Another way would be to release a Last of Us 1.5, where the focus is on Joel and Ellie (and maybe Joel's past) . The story could be all about doing supply runs and just be a comfy game, as the best part of 2 was the flashbacks. As a show of good faith they could even make it a small budget romp with a small price tag as a way to appease the fans.
Or if they wanted to reuse assets, they could have done dead rising off the record, where Tommy instead of Joel dies and the story is about Joel's revenge (where Joel and Ellie are playable). Ellie could be trying to stop as Joel becomes more ruthless. (This is basic and dumb but a remix of 2 would probably be cheaper to do and could make fsns more happy with the story).

RDR2's story might have problems (mostly involving characters being stupid, the pacing occasionally being way off, and continuity errors with it and the first game), but they're nowhere near as bad the ones in TLoU2. Honestly, they're not even comparable.

RDR2 has a lot of issues due to being open world and also apparently cutting out complete sections wholesale weeks before launch. IIRC just recently it was discovered that the possible 2nd love interest cut weeks before release was the mother of Authors dead son based on data found in the PC files which blows my mind considering in the final release shes only mentioned in an optional dialogue in an optional mission and is said to have been long dead at that, and this seemingly last minute change is a highly defining character trait of Arthur.

It seems clear to me that the game had multiple re writes and reshoots up to the release so the fact it's as coherent as it is is a miracle honestly.

Joel lives and skullfucks Abby DLC maybe? That’s the only way this might turn out positively in their favor.

Firstly, for a game that prides itself on realism and attention to detail, Abby's crucifixion isn't anywhere near as painful looking as it actually would have been. Crucifixion kills you by cramp. It's a really fucking painful way to go. Even without the blood loss from nails through the wrists and ankles, the entire weight of your body on three points hyper-extends the arms in a way that basically precludes you from breathing, unless you push up with your feet as they are nailed to the cross. Unfortunately you can't do this for very long and eventually the lactic acid builds up in your legs which stops them from being able to push you up and thus breathe and you suffocate. (We know about this because there are some religious types in South America who basically crucify themselves as a form of mortifying the flesh and some have taken it too far and died.) Then there's the whole infection from open wounds thing, dehydration, starvation, and so forth. The Romans really knew what they were doing when they came up with this one. Other than burning alive and scaphism it's probably the worst way to go.
"Well, at least it gets you out in the open air."

You know, people are saying that this is the gaming equivalent of TLJ, right down to fucking RUSSIAN BOTS being unironically blamed for it (which for me is the equivalent of saying "please be patient, I have autism"). And thats not exactly false, however, I think the big difference is that

1- A lot people who are big TLJ defenders are saying they hate TLOU Part 2

2- TLJ, at th very very least, was clear it was meant for someone. Its a pretentious mess that appeals to a very small demografic that doesnt consume SW as much if at all but at least it had a "target audience" to appeal to, TLOU Part 2 tried the same TLJ did, however, it appealed to literally no one, as even the TLJ crowd hates it (outside of some re.tarded exceptions of course)

3- There is a significant difference between the movie goer and gamer, they can coincide with each other but gamers are usually harder to please but far more loyal when you earn the praise. Gamers are harder to bullshit than the common movie goer that isnt into gaming as much. Thats because gamers are an oppressed class (what I mean is that us gamers were the butt of jokes, fear mongering and ridicule right until gaming had become more mainstream, which I think we can thank the likes of youtube and streaming sites for. It still happens to this day, however, there are usually other aspects injected in, such as politics) therefore we know when we are being shat on and when our media is being used to insult and manipulate us. Im obviously not saying the non-gamer movie goer cant see bullshit but I dont think its a coincidence that a lot of people that see TLJ as "genius" tend to not play games because they suck at them. Movie goers usually eat up and try to find meaning, they get insulted and try to see the genius behind it. While us gamers get insulted and then understandably get pissed and throw it right back on their faces. We do not take shit laying down.

And to my final point

4- Movies and games are different medias, once you watch a movie, you see its garbage and almost all you can really do is to write how bad it is, you cant exactly demand your money back. Games are different, however, we can demand a refund for mediocre products, its not always easy but it affects far more than just write another negative review that Cuckmann and sony are clearly going to ignore, demand your money back! A lot of people who avoided leaks (and I almost admire them in a "too pure for this world" sense) are complaining its awful, shit we have been doing for months before them, but never seem to mention if they are refunding the game or not. its only been 2-3 days the game is out, Im sure refund policies on both digital and physical copies can still be applied. Sure, companies make it a bureocratic nightmare on purpose to force you to give up on it but, hey, you were warned, now the least you could do is to make sure they dont get your money. How many times do I have to tell people. 👏VOTE👏WITH👏YOUR👏WALLET!!

People need to comprehend that big corporations only truly care about numbers, if you hate them while giving them money, they will use that money to wipe their tears Zombieland styled and call you an "ism" (because fuck actually respecting your consumers, they already have your money so...) but if they dont get that sweet cash, they can throw how many tantrums on social media and mainstream media, it wont change the fact it was a flop and now they gotta suffer the consequences.

DLC = Ellie accidentally gets hurt by the Stand Arrow, gains a Time Traveling Stand..goes back in time and ORA ORA ORA ORA's Abbie for 30 minutes. Saving Joel's life.

What makes it even worse is that the love interest we did get, Mary whatever the fuck her last name was, is so fucking bland and forgettable I don't even know why she kept at all. She and Arthur have literally no chemistry whatsoever.

From what I understand, when it comes to the major publishers that answer to shareholders, any sales that are *less* than the previous game in the franchise are considered a disappointment. They want constant growth.

This showed why we fell in love with the first one

The Joel and Ellie sections - from the flashbacks to the introductory scene where he gives her the guitar - are definitely the best written parts of the game. The game's narrative disaster is clearly due to deliberate creative decisions rather than a lack of talent. That's what makes it the most disappointing tbh.

8 million would be stunning for a lower budget game, but then you take into account the 7 years of development + the marketing and you get something that needs way more to not be in the red.

There are games that have seriously done well over that, and still died as they hemoraged all of their capital anyways.

I don't expect an abject failure since everything was done to try and maximize Day 1 sales in expectation of the backlash.

In Cuckmanns mind you know he things he pulled a perfect copy of RDR's ending. But Rockstar actually really respected the character and the fans, which shows especially in how they let you try to win. They know the outcome is that John dies, but they let him go out a hero, they let the fans try to save him. I know I can't be the only one that tried multiple times to kill all the Pinkerton faggots and ride off into the sunset.

it feel like the rest of the game was an afterthought, all the best writers worked on the flash backs
