I tried explaining the monuments argument to my dad (an upper-class black professional), saying that if we were knocking down statues of Grant because he had a slave for a year that it was only a matter of time before we started going after Washington, Jefferson, Caesar, Augustus, Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Alexander...he's cool with all of it. When I brought up Cervantes' statue being vandalized (Cervantes was literally a slave for 5 years), he brushed it off as Cervantes being racist because of a couple throwaway lines in Don Quixote. He's hardcore into reparations too, when I pointed out that my siblings ad I are all half-white he said that it would be ok because we were somehow victims. When I mentioned that our mom would be on the hook for some payments, or that his new gf (a white chick even younger than me) would also be on the hook, he again brushed me off and said I had internalized racism.
I'm mostly whining here because I can't bitch about this on normal social media (because I'd be fired in a heartbeat), but it's utterly disturbing to watch. A black man who grew up in a 3rd world shithole, was lucky enough to be brought to the US at a young age, given a scholarship through affirmative action, then married a white woman, is screaming for the whole thing to be burnt down, all while claiming that his own children are somehow leeches benefiting from white privilege.
I hate this country. America was a mistake.
