This might be as fuck (and if so feel free to rate accordingly) because this thread exploded and I have around 70 pages to read before I catch up.

I'm finding it hilarious people are using LGBT representation as a defense of this game and saying one of the reasons for the awful reviews are that the dreaded white cis male gamer just hates teh geys and is afraid of playing games where the protagonist isn't a grizzled white dude. If I was someone who genuinely hated gays, this dumpster fire would be 10/10 GOTY material.

Think about it. You get to graphically beat up not one, but two lesbians to near death, the confirmed trans character is only important to the story on the part where they get deadnamed (the horror) and treated as their birth sex by people who do not give a fuck about their feelings, and Abby, who most people will assume is trans, is loathsome.

There is no positive LGBT representation in this game, everyone comes out looking bad. Ellie is an ass to others, ends up losing everything due to Abby and is retarded enough to forgive Abby and let her live in the end, all the while not forgiving Joel for saving her life. Dina is either a cheater or someone who easily discards people she supposedly cares about, as seen when she immediately leaves Jessie for Ellie after one drunken kiss, even though they were together for years. Lev's only character traits are sucking up to Abby (much like all the others in her group) and suffering from their transness from the Seraphites, because gender is something people care about after the world has gone to shit. Their background also makes it seem like they are only "trans" out of a desire to not be made a wife to the elders of the cult rather than any genuine desire of changing their gender. And then there's Abby, who I won't talk about because there's 400+ pages of people doing that already.

I'm betting most of the people who are praising the "representation" are straight as an arrow as well as every time I see a gay person commenting on it is usually "Jesus H Christ, this is a walking dumpster fire those 50's propaganda movies against homosexuality are more favorable then this shit to us"

I think the biggest thing that helped the first game was that it had a tight narrative and told one story in the least amount of time it could. The characters were better and more grounded but there were also fewer of them so they each got a greater narrative focus. The cast in the second game is too bloated and too many of the characters are too weak to carry the narrative they're being asked to.

In the first game Joel and Ellie are doing all the heavy lifting but the supporting cast is good as well but also again, small. There's less than 15 named characters in the entire first game. You have Sarah, Joel, Tommy, Tess, Robert, Marleen, Ellie, Bill, Sam, Henry, Maria, David and Jimmy. The rest are just nameless goons you kill.

The second game is juggling so many characters and narrative threads it gets lost and fucks itself to death. You have Abby's revenge plot which is resolved when she goes all PGA tour on Joel. Then you have Ellie's revenge. You have the romantic subplot with her and Dina. You have Dina's pregnancy and the fact she's not telling Jesse about it. You have Jesse who just wants to help his friends. You have Tommy off on his own adventure and Ellie trying to find him to join forces in Seattle. You have Abby, Owen and Mel in a love triangle. You have Abby betraying everyone. You have Owen wanting to leave the WLF to go find Fireflies. You have the war between the WLF and the Scars. You have Transboy betraying the scars by being trans and then killing a bunch of them. You have transboy's sister's arm needing to be chopped off. You have Abby deciding to even help these two for what seems to be no reason, she says it's because they saved her life but the first person you saw do that she had no problem torturing them to death so it seems hollow. You have transboy trying to convince his super religious mom. You have Abby and sister trying to save him, and getting the middle of a war to do so. Then you have Abby finding out that Ellie killed her friends and going for revenge. And then you have Abby and transboy taking Owen's goals to find fireflies then you have Ellie's final revenge plot.

Writing that out really shows how much of a mess this game was for its narrative.

Also, in the first game, the supporting cast usually just came and went. Henry and Sam hung out with Joel and Ellie, then they leave the story, and the cycle continues.

The way the second game’s story presents itself should have been used for a TV show or a book, or even a non-linear video game. Yet this isn’t it.

Reddit has always been nothing but autism. I liked the first game a lot and am really unhappy overall with this sequel but I mean it's better than I expected after the leaks but that's not saying much. I came into this with low expectations and it managed to exceed that low bar but not by much.

Anyone living in current year though who hasn't gotten a franchise mangled for them is lucky, I expect it at this point.

This is a very good point. ESPECIALLY in a post-apocalypse world where humanity is dying out. Mothers would be the most, if not second most valuable people around as to ensure humanity actually survives. So they should be as far as possible from danger, ESPECIALLY if they are in their THIRD-TRIMESTER of the pregancy (the moment when the mother is most vunerable).
Though, judging how the fireflies acted in the first game, this level of idiocy actually makes sense and is in line with the groups behaviour.

You see, just because he's the father, he has zero say in whether or not the highly pregnant mother of his child should go into a very dangerous "warzone".
The entire game is full of more or less subtle digs at men and their unimportance.

Been a while since I played it on PS3 (actually, come to think of it, it's crazy the sequel is only coming out now when the PS5 is nearly here) but what I took from it was:

* The Fireflies are just another group of bad guys. They claim to have altruistic motives, but so does every terrorist group.

* They have killed other immune people.

* They were never going to let Ellie leave the hospital alive.

Because TLOU was well written and acted, Marlene isn't a cackling villain. She's a warm, sympathetic, intelligent woman who is willing to murder a child in the hope it might yield a cure for the zombie mushroom plague.

She's the kinder, gentler, more liberal version of David the cannibal leader. They both initially seem like reasonable, decent people until you find out they both want to kill and consume Ellie. For different reasons that both amount to the same objective - David kills people to feed his followers, so they can survive. Marlene is willing to kill so that humanity in general might survive.

Marlene is as much a monster as David is, but her monstrousness is a more banal form of evil. Not the horror movie grotesque of the cannibals, but no less evil.

Joel also kills people, out of self defense and defense of his surrogate daughter. His violence is righteous. He's not out to take from others, merely to stop bad people from doing bad things to a young girl. They won't be reasoned with, so there's no peaceful option to save her life.

As Joel says, "you'd just come after her".

Yeah, it's totally not because the writing is shit and they're destroying a beloved game and its characters right? Imo Joel isn't limited to be some cis het white male, he was interesting because where mainstream media likes to portray dads as less responsible, less caring and less loving than moms can. Is dad spending time with the kids? Let's make him really clumsy and he doesn't know how to handle anything. Let's make a joke about how mom is taking a day off. That's dumb logic. Joel was a good dad and I loved him for that, not because I identify with his gender, skin, orientation and his penchant for violence.

Using LGBT as a defense against bad reviews is also wrong, and blind. People are making fun of Abby's physique but are people really seeing the memes and reading/listening to the bad reviews and they only deduce it's because of LGBT characters. Are they retarded? Literally no one is saying "wow too much gayness in this game, I hate it". The first game had lgbt characters and no one complained. FFVII has a segment with crossdressing and no one complained.

Slight powerlevel but I'm only mentioning it because I believe it to be relevant, I'm part of the lgbt and I've been questioning my own identity for a while. Shouldn't I instantly fall in love with the game then? I should totally relate to the characters? Is this what they're implying? Nope. It's the opposite, if anything. I find them completely unrelatable and I'm legit pissed when artists/creators are using lgbt for brownie points and queerbaiting. I see what you're doing and it's wrong, don't do that. And it's been mentioned before but Lev isn't trans. There's no identity crisis or dysphoria or "I feel like I'm the wrong gender and I'm not comfortable in my own body". She just didn't like the gender roles. It's a good idea for a character, but she's not trans, that's not how it works. Druckmann probably think Mulan and Arya Stark are trans too. Mulan pretended to be a man in order to be a soldier but she's still a woman. Arya Stark was hiding that she's Arya Stark and that she's a girl so she could avoid being murdered and raped. It's like Druckmann is so far up his ass (pun not intended) that he promotes himself as woke but he doesn't understand the things he claims to be promoting. Just like he's a feminist that kicked out a woman from the company. He's not woke, he's a paralysis demon in broad daylight.
