It's the whole "you used to think gays were perverts, too, and you were wrong -- so you are wrong about us, too" argument. The huge difference, of course, is that gay rights was about the rights of consenting adults to have sex.

Children aren't capable of making informed decisions, at least aren't considered to be capable. It's why they can't consent to sex, require parental permission for many things, and can't sign contracts alone. Desmond doesn't know any better and won't for a while, and isn't responsible for any of it. If he were a teen there could be more to it but even then teens aren't the most educated or wise and can't make the "best" decisions and why all the threads on the site are focused on adults.

One of the more worrying possibilities is simply that Desmond won't become independent. I said it before but I still hope Desmond may find this thread when he is older, to see the perspective of how bad his mom was really treating him. It is interesting to me that despite all the coaching from Wendy, Desmond does not seem like he really accepts this hideous personality she keeps forcing on him. He will act for the camera but I don't see it genuinely sticking. He is naturally shy, making it that much more awful that Wendy forces him to do the things like performance and online fame chasing. It's sad because he probably can tell that there's something wrong with his mom and with his life, but with everyone around him cheering it on, there is no one really to validate those feelings he has, of being scared and uncomfortable with the way things are.

I agree. My biggest hope for Desmond is that once he's 18, he's gonna split. If he decides to continue the drag thing, that's fine--- likely he'll get better at it once he's away from his style-impaired mother, and around friends his own age.
