Alright, I bit the bullet and checked out the episode 4 commentary. Below is
some of the transcript, it ws just such a rambling commentary. Those who have copies of
Ouran High School Host Club can cross-reference it for themselves because even when taken out-of-context, these are the commentators' legit thoughts they spewed into the microphone while watching the episode. I don't know if I'll watch the other commentaries to get their thoughts, I only watched this because it was the only commentary Monica recorded for this show.
I'm gonna color-code for easier reading, I hope things are still readable no matter how I format:
Caitlin Glass
Monica Rial
J. Michael Tatum
“I like to use fake names to throw people off.” - Monica Rial, but uses her real name for the character
...
“That Monica is a phony.” - J. Michael Tatum
...
“Secretly I have a J. Michael Tatum stash at home.” - Monica Rial
...
“They should make Honey plushies. And then Mori blow-up dolls.” - Monica Rial
“Come on, we'd all want one.” - J. Michael Tatum
(
Mori is 18, but is still in high school. Also, he's dubbed by Travis Willingham.)
...
“[Vic] is Tamaki. I love it. And you know what's funny, right when he got this role, like the next time I saw him, his hair was blonder! I don't think he did it on purpose, but like maybe I just subconsciously...” - Monica Rial
...
“It's very easy for me to play psychos, evidently. I play a lot of them.”
“Do you draw from everyday experience?”
“Yeah, I'm totally a psycho.”
“Well, in this business, we run into a lot of them.”
“True that!”
...
“I'm so impressed with what Vic does. Hearing him, I can't imagine anybody else. 'Cause Tamaki is so difficult because he goes between this really calm, suave, princely sort of character to being this utterly insane (
“On a dime!”)
just emotional freak—yeah, on a dime. And Vic does it, it's brilliant.”
“Yeah and he has also to be like an adult to act very mature sometimes, and other times he's acting like, you know, an idiotic five-year-old.”
“And none of that is an act. That's the thing about it. It all has to come off as being—that's just how he is. Take it or leave it.”
...
“I'm telling you, there's certain characters in your life that are easier to play than others. For some reason Renge just happens to be very easy for me.”
(I honestly don't remember Renge as a character, much less the show at this point, but if Monica saw herself in Renge and Renge's an obnoxious spastic emotional wreck...)
...
“Not that there's anything wrong with otaku.” - Monica Rial, years before she shit on otaku fans online
...
Right from the “KISS KISS FALL IN LOVE”, the commentary is actually rather fucking obnoxious, it took some willpower to stay to the end, and Monica has a shrill laugh that seriously can't be real. Like yeah, friends can poke each other and have fun, you can tell Monica, J. Michael, and Caitlin are comfortable with each other to talk as naturally as they did here, but the commentary wasn't really about the production or their own thoughts on the show, least not until the second-half somewhat, they just kinda bullshit about and riff the episode. They mention how wonderful it was for the voice-actors to have musical talent for the show, which wasn't something I had ever noticed, but it was a show I had to pinch myself awake at times when I had watched it.
As noted above, they of course praise Vic's performance for Tamaki and say he really
was perfect for the role. And yet according to at least MoRonica and Jamie, he was a serial sex offender they kept around to make bank until they no longer needed him.
Ugh, my ears hurt. I need cleansing...
