I just got a flashback scene with Joel and Ellie and it was actually good. If Ellie is unique and has immunity, why can’t Abby be also different and have her own unique traits. It’s not a hard concept to grasp on.

Did it just spring into being? Nope, it just appeared because the script needs the plot to happen.

All these people need feeding and housing and to avoid being got by infected or reavers. And prevented from thinking, fuck this for a game of soldiers, I'll take my chances with the mushroom zombies. This is why the "cozy catastrophe" doesn't work, or only works after many generations have come and gone. Think about this. The Western Roman Empire fell in 453. It took over 500 years before successor states approaching similar power and population came along in western Europe, and that was with trade and commerce from the Eastern Roman Empire, Persia, India, and China atop it. It wasn't that people forgot how to do things, it was that they didn't have the infrastructure in place to do it because they'd looted it all to survive.
