Maybe he's trying to convince himself that it isn't that bad because he knows his beloved pay-pig isn't going to be able to provide for him for a long time to come. Zach might actually have to take care of himself for once and that is almost certainly a horrifying thought for him.

Zach's trying to build a case for himself to "prove" just how much he loves and cares for Heather, so it'll be easier for him to convince Heather's mom to let him leech on the family.
I agree. Zach's in denial that his paypig will end up severely brain dead or just plain dead, and then his gravy train will be derailed.
