I mean both games are bad because they are movies.

Story games can be good, especially when you're in the mood to be taken for a ride. If it's a good ride, you'll happily plow thru things to find out the rest of the story. But if the butter is not worth the churn... that is bad. Gameplay here doesn't look like it's worth the churn, even if I give the butter the benefit of the doubt.

But storywise i atleast can see argument why LOU1 is better. Like it feels like TV dramas, i hate TV dramas but.
The idea of you being last person having a huge impact of the world of what it would legit feel like in a world where you have nothing to live for except pure instincts. Like that alteast makes sense.

I actually disagree on this one and think he's got integrity in that he honestly feels that way about the game, but I do think he's not being transparent (or at least direct) about why he feels that way. He originally scored TLOU1 like shit but said it grew on him significantly, and the same is true for Uncharted 4. Plainly, his tastes have been changing - when he first started out, he was more of just a guy that liked well-designed, fun games.

Now it seems like his interest is more in games that offer emotional, cinematic experiences that are straightforward and simple, OR in games which are focused purely on simple gameplay. The more 'serious' reviews of things, particularly of films, seems totally out of character for his older persona -- but also reveals that he doesn't really like subtext or abstract story. He doesn't seem terribly interested in games with complex systems and learning curves, other than fighting games.

So the gameplay of TLOU2 is incredibly simple and clunky that iterates on very little from the first, but it -looks- smooth and silky and neat and fulfills a 'cinematic' aesthetic. The story is incredibly shallow and features just about nothing going on under the hood, so it ultimately doesn't matter how nonsensical it is when you stop to think about it - he doesn't really seem to do that.

tl;dr he's got 'games as art-itis' and so a shallow cinematic experience gets highly overrated so long as it feels like a movie as you play through it, which makes ND games get significant boosts whereas a weird clusterfuck of narrative retardation depending on subtext like DS doesn't win any points
