If the paper found a different conclusion it just wouldn't have been published, haha. That's literally how academia works and it's worse than you think. After getting my degree I couldn't stay in academia longer, it made me more skeptical of science after seeing how the sausage is made, at least stuff softer than biology.

Yeah, just because more other people stayed home which created a counterbalancing effect doesn't mean that the protests didn't contribute to coronavirus spread.
