I remember having a teacher in middleschool who would walk around with a yard stick and slap it against stuff like students' desks or the white board. Never hit a kid with it. He would also make fun of kids for being disruptive. Worked pretty well.

He was actually a student favorite too

can confirm. one of the best teachers I've ever had was strict but not an authoritarian asshole, everyone just had mad respect. even now I still don't understand how he did it.

When I was in High School my senior year I ended up being an office aid for the HS, I had to deliver some papers to a teacher who had the rep of being a hard ass, he was yelling at his class because they didn't do something that needed to be done, he was red in the face. I never had him but I was needless to say scared shitless when I knocked on his door and the room went silent and all eyes were on me. A few weeks later, he is in the office consoling some student over something the student was extremely upset, and it dawn on me, teachers who are the hard asses often are the ones who actually give a shit about their students and more then anything want to see them succeed, Yes most teachers care about their students and want to see them succeed too, but the ones who will acctually hold their students accountable are the ones who care the most.
