Iconoclasm used to be a thing for a period of time during the era of the Eastern Roman Empire but it kinda of fell out of favor because the wealthier Roman Christians of Constantinople weren't very big fans of seeing all their religious iconography destroyed and the Pope in Rome definitely wasn't in favor of it, it just fueled the eventual divide between east and west that we have now with Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism. You don't really see it much anymore though with modern Christians, they're pretty accustomed to their statues and numerous other religious symbols.

True, but I think you're downplaying the severity of Iconoclasm though. It might seem a bump in the road 1000 years later, but at the time it was several decades of sometimes violent fighting and the destruction of priceless Roman art.
