The US may voluntarily relinquish its status as a world power and Europeans must brace themselves for such a contingency, including by boosting their militaries, the German chancellor has warned.
European nations need “to carry more of the burden than during the cold war” in terms of defense spending, Merkel said, because they cannot assume that the US will be there to protect them.
“We grew up in the certain knowledge that the United States wanted to be a world power. Should the US now wish to withdraw from that role of its own free will, we would have to reflect on that very deeply,” she said, in an interview published in six European newspapers.

The German leader stopped short of advocating a joint EU military force, the idea favored by French President Emmanuel Macron. She said she saw the value of NATO capabilities, including the shared nuclear umbrella, in a world of the rising Asian powers China and India.
The French leader has a much more skeptical attitude towards the transatlantic defense bloc. Last year he said NATO was “brain dead.”
Merkel lamented the increasing selfishness of nations today, which, she said, contrasts with the unified multilateral response to the 2008 financial crisis. “These days, we have to do all we can to stop ourselves collapsing into protectionism,” she said.
“If Europe wants to be heard, then it needs to set a good example.”
Protectionist approaches are at the core of the Trump administration’s foreign policy. Under Trump, Washington pushed for the renegotiation of trade deals that the US president saw as unfavorable to his country. He also dialed up to 11 the criticism of European NATO members like Germany, which fail to meet their military spending obligations, calling them freeloaders. And his administration has made confrontation with China on all fronts a priority, ramping up the pressure on third nations to scare them away from cooperating with Beijing.
Speaking about China, Merkel said its rise “shows that even an undemocratic state can be economically successful, which is a major challenge for our liberal democracies.” This example and other post-cold war developments, from the emergence of the Islamist terrorist threat to the disappointing results of the Arab Spring, are a matter of grave concern for believers in liberal causes like herself.
“We have not yet been able to furnish absolute proof that the liberal system is about to win the day.”
But Merkel seems reluctant to join the US and go for a major confrontation with China, saying Beijing’s new-found power is a reality that other nations have to learn to live with.
“China has become a global player. That makes us partners in economic cooperation and combating climate change, but also competitors with very different political systems,” she said.
“Not to talk to each other would certainly be a bad idea.”
The same is true for Russia, the country that the US sees as its other strategic rival. Berlin needs to remain engaged with Moscow despite all issues in their bilateral relations.
“In countries like Syria and Libya, countries in Europe’s immediate neighbourhood, Russia’s strategic influence is great,” Merkel explained.
“I will therefore continue to strive for cooperation.”

Translation: European nations who haven't spent money on their military's for the last 30 years and bitch about US military spending are alarmed that they'll have to pay for their own protection again.

I love the fact that most of you cant read and you have a bunch of Karen like facebook reactions to it.

The US is pulling it self away from world affairs and looking inward and Europe has to build it's own military capabilities to protect it self.
Right sorry i forgot EU BAD REEEEEEEEEE.
For all the Democrats screaming about Trump's attacks on NATO he's correct, Germany doesn't pull their weight in NATO and it's a position that Bernie Sanders holds as well.

Poland contributes more to NATO than Germany.

Germany showed up to NATO join exercises in 2015 with broom sticks painted black because they didn't have enough machine guns to go around.

Shoudln't the germans be happy that its their time to bring in woke Hitler 2.0.

Considering Russia is actually facing internal strife that is drawing its eye away from us and that China is very eager to buddy up with us....Is America really this stuck in the Cold War that it hasn't realized international relations have moved on since then?
russian internal strife is a laughable nothingburger that gets hyped and blown out of proportion by western media because it aligns with their wishful thinking and daydreaming about how the world should be
and anybody who unironically considers the idea of buddying up with the ccp a good thing is so absurdly delusional, it's not even funny anymore, just sad tbh

Plus China is by far the biggest threat to world peace so shifting the US forces to cover Asia would make much more sense anyway.

...Lets see.

Does China recognize Climate Change and try to work against it, unlike the US? Check

Does China recognize the current Russian government is an unstable mess and activley work against them? Check

Does China behave civilly to European politicians and negotiate as a fellow state rather than a liege lord? Check

Contrary to popular belief within the US, not everyone thinks America is the infallible shining paladin of virtue.

It's hard to create a EU army if you don't first create a power vacuum that requires one.

It's easy to agree to international climate change treaty's that involve transfer of wealth from US and EU towards "developing nations" (which includes China) if you're China. They'll happily build renewable energy sources with other's money.

Does China respect the basic human rights of it's citizens, allow freedom of the press and religion and not jail you for political dissonance? There's more to being a world leader than aligning with cherry-picked ways you are in-line with the ethics of the modern First-World while utterly failing in others.

>climate change
literally nothing to do with world peace / global security
also china is both the biggest global polluter and the fastest growing global polluter so you might want to reconsider your position lol

>russia
the only thing preventing russia from going for crimea style land grabs in the baltic states (and possibly other former soviet republics) is american military presence and threats lol
china certainly doesn't give a fuck, their own behavior is in fact pretty similar in the south china sea area

and that third point is just you being butthurt about trump not acting PC enough for your tastes i guess? lmao

The EU is bad though.

They've taken the rights away from the sovereign nations of Europe and its citizens while coalescing power into a extra-national body that answers to no one. The UK seems to be the only sane player in the game because they realized this and got out. And even that was a struggle that they are still dealing with.

Does Europe do any of those things? Why would we condemn a state for banning the exact same things we do?

Why would the EU condemn China for banning things it does not permit itself since the Lisbon treaty came into force? I'm hardly an advocate for the European Union, and I'm not a fan of America either but Merkel's stance makes perfect sense where she is speaking from.

well as a german she certainly is an expert on no longer being a world power so she may be on to something here...?

we know and understand what it says in the article you buffoon. we make fun of it because the idea that the nation with the worlds largest military, worlds largest economy, and worlds largest nuclear arsenal could somehow become "no longer a world power" is utterly laughable.

what she actually is saying is that she should prepare for a scenario where the premier world power decides to change policy and stop babysitting her fat ass and her countrys interests for free, which is a correct and sensible position to take. but the almost pathological need to frame everything in a MURICA WEAK DRUMPF BAD narrative makes the whole thing laughable and pathetic, which is why we only react with mockery.

See this is the stupid Karen reaction i was talking about.

Yes she is talking about the fact that the EU is less and less aligning it self with US doctrine and ideas. This also means that the US will not "protect" us and there for there are moves going forward with the joint EU army. This could mean a complete Breake with US doctrine, but that is part of it.

HOW EVER
but the almost pathological need to frame everything in a MURICA WEAK DRUMPF BAD narrative makes the whole thing laughable and pathetic, which is why we only react with mockery.

See there is non of that at all in the article. NO one is talking about Trump being bad or that America is weak. It is literally talking about a realigning of doctrine and policies.

You are projecting because of a title given by Russia Today, but i guess reading is hard Karen.

They're panicked that we won't fund their national defense anymore and will actually have to pay for it themselves.

on TOP of the EU falling to pieces meaning everyone around them will be even WORSE off than now when it comes to trying to render some kind of mutual aid. If they think all those "enriching" immigrants are gonna pick up a rifle in defense of the nation, I got news. They love their gibs checks, but they ain't gonna die for them when there's other countries to leech welfare from that AREN'T being invaded, and they'll fuck right off, probably telling the invaders on the way out where all the high-value targets are just to stick it to them.

I'm all for Europe actually deciding national defense is important and living up to if not treaty obligations than what should be western ideals of being ready to defend your own people if the worst happens, but, until they also get serious about dismantling the welfare state and endless progressive social engineering programs that sap both the will and funds to field a competent army, then I don't actually believe anything military-related out of Europe is anything but more hollow promises.

If you can't see the climate wars and the migrant crisises that will come from climate change then you are a fool.

China is far enough away though that their deeds fair or foul don't really affect the EU, unlike Russia.

If you follow the Russian news, Putin has been in something of a tailspin since his potential term was extended. He, and the Russian Orthodox Church, are currently deeply unpopular across the board.

and that third point is just you being butthurt about trump not acting PC enough for your tastes i guess? lmao

As a non-white former far-theocratic right devout Catholic-now-athiest I'm probably the least PC person you will ever encounter.

Regardless of my origins, that does not mean I think electing a lecherous TV show host was a good idea.

That's not what he said, or what you said, to start with.

Your contention was China was doing more about climate change than the US

He pointed out, correctly, that they are the biggest polluter on the planet and haven't done anything about it except the kind of window-dressing measures every first-world country does to make the greens happy, deep down inside, they don't care, since the levels of pollution are getting worse. The whole reason the first-world shipped them all the industry was because it was cheaper to manufacturer there because you didn't HAVE any pollution laws to follow. You could still dump raw waste directly down a pipe into a river, and they do. You can't do that in the US and about 50 other western nations, I'd wager.....

And in return, you said he was a fool because.... climate change bad.

Yes, I think we agree on that, it's just that China isn't a shining star of how to combat it..... since they don't care the air in Beijing is chewable if the Olympics aren't in town.... China is not "trying to tackle it" they're just making PR stabs at it so the world doesn't actually FORCE them to take action by threatening to take back their industry and force it to run cleaner in their own home countries.

China is not a shining example of ecological stewardship, and they aren't even TRYING behind the scenes.

Still not as immediate a threat as the poison America is pumping into the EU e.g: BLM.

>No, we are acting in our own interests and you are fatally optimistic for thinking China isn’t as well
China is, but China's interests are increasingly aligning more with the EU than America's does.

Doesn't that tell you anything? Despite decades, if not centuries of common alignment with the Nothern Hemisphere of the Americas Europe now finds Trump's America so vile, so repugnant, so degenerate they're willing to throw their lot in with the Chinese communists rather than side with America.

And that isn't indicative of a problem infesting America?

Europe: seeds anti-america sentiment for decades to no end, derides and shits on american values and compare american citizens to cavemen.
America: ok bye
Europe: guys we might be fucked *reinstalls obligatory military service*

I found this sentence particularly telling as to what the priorities of Merkel, and presumably her fellow globalists, are:

'Speaking about China, Merkel said its rise “shows that even an undemocratic state can be economically successful, which is a major challenge for our liberal democracies.”'

You can almost hear the heel click and unsaid "Heil Hitler!" in that statement.

No, it's indicative of the EU leaders' communist sympathies.

Pure projection. We are leaving because the EU is collapsing and Germany is no longer a world power. It's gonna be fun to watch Trump buddy up with Germany's vassal states and strip them away one by one.
