Regarding the "open the site up" ideas, it's possible but I doubt it'll happen and all you need to do is look at NeoGAF as proof. It makes too much logical sense.

Lowtax is worse at running a website than Tyler Malka is. Tyler had the great big staff and user exodus after he got #MeToo'd by his own users and unlike goons they actually moved to an offshoot site because Tyler didn't hand it over. Said offshoot site is everything NeoGAF was circa 2014-17, including crazy rules and GAF's notorious "use a work/school email to sign up" policy. The userbase also mirrors GAF of that era as it barely resembles a gaming forum in the same way SomethingAwful barely resembles a comedy forum.

Tyler on the other hand has been attempting to reverse the declines. Tyler for example phased out the email policy and has encouraged signing up to his forum, along with giving the site a visual makeover. While many have called Tyler a snake who caves towards whoever is giving him clicks NeoGAF isn't as dead as it could have been. NeoGAF essentially did what SomethingAwful has been told to multiple times in this thread (open the fucking site up for anyone to use) and it's breathed new life into it.
