The closest thing to a "protest" these people could make that would have any actual effect is to disconnect from these sites entirely.

It will never happen, just like the NFL is never going to go bankrupt. It would take an ounce of willpower to do it, and they won't.
these motherfuckers dont understand that eveytime they go to a site they give 5 dollars per tab. there like toddlers who cant understand an object behind someones back.

Reddit hasn't been worthy of attention ever since they banned r/Cringeanarchy

I'd say it was around the time that they removed it from reaching /r/all. Seeing normal users stumble into a thread and get torn apart was always hilarious. People would try and report posts/cry to the mods to no avail. It made it obvious how sanitized the rest of the site was because of overzealous powermods removing the slightest hint of disagreement or wrongthink.

Really the only people displaced by this ban are those who are not part of the Reddit army of mindless consumer drones. but like @6thRanger said the conservatives who had there subreddits banned never seem to get the hint no mater how many times it happens. They have had plenty of time to reject Reddit and at least make an account on some other site as a back up.

As someone who used to only really use the internet for flash games and rage comics joining plebbit like a year ago was a big mistake and I feel like it has ruined my creativity. if anyone has any advice on how to dereddit your brain let me know.

EDIT: what do you guys think is the change that doomed Reddit?

For me I think it was doomed from the start because of its voting system that conditions users to toe the line or risk being down voted. Socrates hated democracy because it let dumb people vote and on Reddit the exact same mob rule issue exists. the user base quantifies your posts and comments not by how true they are but by how well they fit the narrative of a subreddit and spread its and ideas. For example a comment saying "FUCK TERFS!!! TRANS RIGHTS!!" would likely get many more up votes than a well thought out comment or critique of LGBTQ issues on a trans subreddit. this is almost exactly the kind of future described in the game MGS2 where "no one can be invalidated but no one is right". I think 4chan does things way better by having most boards be on broad subjects instead of specific ones.

(also I know it shows I never edited this comment I just typed this up a while ago but never posted and added the edit just now)

There was a post on /pol/ (I think. Correct me if I'm wrong if someone here knows what I'm talking about) where a guy said he had a friend who worked for reddit, and that reddit employees get infinite awards on their personal accounts and that they have a certain number of "coins" they can give to friends and family to encourage people to give awards and stimulate more organic award purchasing in turn.
It makes sense, but I definitely don't think it's organic for that post. Why? Go take a look at other posts in the announcement subs, they probably have just as many fake upvotes but this one is still lower than the others. I can't see the percentage myself, but a commenter pointed out that it was strange the post had around a 50% upvote rating.

In case you were wondering, Reddit's new ADL approved rules SPECIFICALLY ALLOW RACISM against White people, Sexism against Men, Bigotry against Heterosexuals, Harassment of "cis" (normal) people by Troons, et cetera.

No matter what they tell you: It's not Racism. It's pattern recognition and self defense.

Btw, you're getting into what is called "white fragility", so be careful: people will think you are privilege, a cuckold, and beyond that have toxic masculinity and thus aren't kind, nor emotionally intelligent enough to understand ANYTHING.

Congraulations, you now have experienced "stereotyping": all white straight men are simpswho are cuckolded and lack emotional intelligence. That is your racial prejudice.

You sadly won't be able to argue against reverse racism until you all become the minority, which is slowly starting to happen over this decade.

And the moment you fight, they will fight back, because they have always been targeted by the above group. An eye for an eye makes the world go blind, sadly.

There are actually efforts to use other websites now. The_donald and consumeproduct have set up .win sites and others have talked about moving to saidit and ruqqus. I think nationalists have finally realised that Reddit isn't for them.

The groups that got GC banned haven’t realised that they actually needed GC and other radical feminism aligned subreddits for “trans women are women” legitimacy. Reddit already has a huge porn base and now every non-porn subreddit will now be strictly TWAW. The small female base it had will be further reduced when the radfems leave and soon the only real women users left will be those posting on GoneWild (adding to the straight male oriented porn base) or handmaidens that gush over terrible trans make-up looks on MakeupAddiction (adding to trans visibility). There will be no female centred feminism or female only biology discussions so the remaining women will be barely visible behind trans inclusive language (e.g. “people who menstruate” etc.)

What this means is that it will be painfully obvious how much the two groups (men fetishising women and transwomen) crosses over when that’s all that is left. It’s like they want to prove r/itsafetish was right after all. Well done.
That's a very interesting point. Slow trend towards degeneracy, this generating another outcry and more bans that lead to reddit being advertiser/sponser friendly SFW as possible.

For fuck's sake. The cancer of social media has metastisized to the point where even moderated, single-topic communities are subject to discussions about completely irrelevant events. All topics must be discussed at all times, everywhere. (Unless they're deemed hate speech, of course.)
I'm glad I'm a Slavshit, at least on websites that cater to people from my country can I avoid the autism vortex that is Western politics. I stopped visiting almost all mostly English-speaking websites I go to until this all blows over because someone making an off hand comment about Drumpf or the BLM protestors will inevitably spark a massive tismstorm.

Can you still say nigger on VK?

I honestly wish I had that option.

That said, has anyone actually made a living off reddit? I know this sounds stupid, but what I mean is - people have made livings or gone on to have professional jobs from youtube due to the content they create. Same can be said for websites like wattpad, deviantart, tumblr(back in the day) and the likes. Has anyone actually rose to fame from reddit or is it a literal waste of time? Not that I can say I've made a living, but reddit has usually been one of the worst places for me to try and get business.

Do you have monopoly laws over there? There’s been talk of breaking up alphabet I know but I have no idea of what is and is not possible legally.
We do, but both parties have been kind of awful at actually doing any kind of trust busting for long enough that I'm not that optimistic. You're completely correct IMO that trust busting and reducing financial regulation is the solution to "muh private company" talking points. Common carrier regulation is an intriguing alternative but the past few years have shown me that relying on bureaucrats to actually follow the law doesn't work past a certain degree of polarization we've long since sailed past.

There is currently a market failure on non-left content, and part of it is caused by government regulation.

I also like the optics of Trump going this route, since it would simultaneously be a big "fuck you" to neocons and neolibs, and lead to hilarious alignments like Elizabeth Warren. It would help dismantle what is left of the Dems' mythology around standing up for the common man against big business.

To be honest, I think this is the reason the problem has gone on as long as it has.

No matter how much people cry about censorship on these giant corporate websites, many of them are hesitant to actually leave because leaving would reduce their audience. They don't want to just talk with other people or share their opinion, they want to preach to a crowd and get lots of asspats, and the draw of these big corporate sites is that just about everyone else is using them. Every so often a wave of bans results in a small exodus to somewhere else, but that exodus never lasts for long because there's not enough of an audience to hold most users' interest.

Having a return to small forums would ultimately solve a lot of issues, but people would have to be broken of their addiction to ego-stroking first.
There's also the problem of discoverability even aside from the barrier to use. How do niche forums find new users to grow to a good size, replace those that leave, etc? How do they cover the bills? How do their admins resist getting doxed and fired from their jobs? Look at all Null has had to endure and sacrifice to keep this place up.

I'm personally favoring more of the "get off the internet" approach, but I worry a lot that ceding it to the censors means cutting off our ability to prevent the next generation from getting radicalized into supporting the status quo (an absurd statement, but that's what it is). They've managed to give the appearance of normalizing this shit. The best chance to fight that is highlighting its contradictions, but I'm still worried they may get away with it, and then the history books will say that "popular attitudes just shifted".

The problem isn't a closed group communicating under the radar, they're terrified of opposition actually organizing, but that requires going out of stealth mode.

It's really a 1-2 punch of centralized sites being controlled by some authoritarian fuck and alternative tech stacks never being able to compete on on UX, and likely to be shut down as "terrorism" if they ever actually took off.

Honestly? I think porn is gonna be the next thing to get axed given how advertiser friendly reddit has become, then it's going to go the way of tumblr.

There's been a lot of 'reddit is dying' fear-mongering on the site for years, but in the event they end up doing that, along with recent policy changes and the ever-looming threat of the revocation of sec. 230, we're actively watching reddit actually die this time.
I disagree on the porn. The left is sex positive, trads have no power, and TERFs have been outlawed forever. It will be policed like any other form of consumption media (I will lmao at PornGate), but it's here to stay at this point, at least in some form, even if they decide to ban cis porn or something.

I know The Donald was huge compared to the rest of Reddit in its day, but even so, I'm skeptical enough people will care enough to stop using it to even make a dent in it in the short term. The damage from this, if any, will come when the monoculture is caught completely flatfooted by some cultural or technological shift (e.g., old media vs new), and unable to adapt, and that takes time.

The problem with salami slicing is that it works.

Hmph. It took 20 million dollars and sitting on the damn thing for 14 years, but Conde Nast is finally getting to flex their purchasing power and "shift the narrative" 4 months before the election. I'm sure it feels good, like firing that old hunting rifle that's been on the den wall for the first time in two decades. Problem is, they haven't been shooting regularly, and aren't going to hit their marks. All those right wingers are going to remember who to vote for in 4 months, all you've done is scare them into the brush.
Of course, but will they be able to organize to spread their message, counteract left wing propaganda, communicate new members, get out the vote, etc? These censorship pushes are entirely about preventing the spread, not stamping it out, whether because underground communities don't get bad press or the realization that they can just smother it with a pillow and it'll die in a generation.

Good job, Reddit. You totally showed him by sending him hundreds of dollars worth of downvote flairs. Go to your room.

I think the vote system is a big part of it. You got stickers here but no one really cares. Yeh you might subconsciously skip over posts that have 20 autismo rates but no one is hiding your comments and shadow banning you because you disagree with the prevailing opinion and are getting downvoted into oblivion. They basically created a systems turbo boosting herd mentality and circlejerking for asspats. Any dissenting opinion gets swiftly stomped down.

Its not even a case of 'dumb' people specifically like the Socrates example. You can disagree with the prevailing opinion and get a tsunami of downvotes even if you express just that, an opinion.

your right about the voting system, having likes and dislikes on a website at all is a bad idea, or at least it seems so to me. if a site is going to have likes though, I think the system the farms has is good, because unlike reddit, you can't be silenced because people don't like you. this leads me into my point, which is this: it was doomed to fail from the beginning, having a system that gives/takes visibility based on the opinion of the masses is so dumb I can't believe the people who made reddit even thought it was a good idea. contrast that to something like 4chan/any chan really, and you see why the latter is always associated with having the best memes/bantz/whatever. it's partially romanticism, but a good portion of the idea that the chans are the best places for memes is mostly correct. an anonymous site, with the only sorting system being how recent a thread was posted, is a prime environment for weeding out shitty content. any thread that gets ignored falls away, and active ones bump back to the top. your right about 4chan having broader topics, but I have always seen it's success as a consequence of it's lack of censorship, both from the mods and from the community. throw anonymity into the mix and you are FORCED to base your opinion on the ideas in the post, and not the account of the op, i.e. there is no: "sweaty, I just looked through your post history, and oh sweet summer child, I thought this was the 21st century, blah blah blah..."
all in all, lack of censorship and "vooting" makes a better site than one that utilizes voting and censorship.

I honestly wish I had that option.
You've got 2 options:
1. Go on Duolingo, learn a new language.
2. OK this will sound fucking crazy, but trust me. I raided some Nigerian forum with some people and we ended up staying because they're fucking hilarious. English is the lingua franca in Nigeria so we could easily fit in, we just pretended we were 2nd generation immigrants in the UK. Find a website of some country where English is the spoken language and then pretend you're a 2nd generation immigrant. Be careful though, not all countries are very fond of diaspora.

The only people I've seen "rise to fame" on that site were destroyed by it.
  • Saydrah - Created the early-reddit catchphrase "The narwhal bacons at midnight" while hanging out in Denver International Airport one day. Was later caught working in marketing and talking about how reddit can be used to promote products (literally how most social media marketing works today). Redditors threw and absolute shit fit and chased her off the site and tried to get her fired.
  • Unidan - Was the "science guy" for reddit until he got in an argument about the proper name for a certain black corvid. Then he got banned. The original claim was he was banned for the argument, but then the official reason reddit gave was "upvote manipulation".
  • Victoria Taylor - Former reddit AMA interviewer. Fired by Alexis Ohanian because he wanted to take over the AMA section.
  • Gallowboob, Shitty_Watercolor, and friends - Used reddit for marketing their own businesses and projects because they got no support from the site for anything they were doing on the site. (Compare with a place like YouTube that says "Hey, we see you're drawing a lot of traffic to the site. Let's work together). Gallowboob also used his reddit karma on his CV. Make of that what you will.
  • Luna Lovewell - Prolific /r/WritingPrompts user. Became pretty famous, tried to leverage that for her own writing. Failed hardcore.
  • Prufrock451 - Wrote a short story called "Rome Sweet Rome" which got picked up by "Hollywood" and then immediately fell into obscurity. Appears to have sold his reddit account.
