Bigot Brigade Something Awful and Friends - The roller-coaster train-wreck embarrassing downfall of a Web 1.0 giant and its tick offspring like from Cloverfield

I've never been a big poster on SA, who was Derek Smart? I only ever see his name bandied around like some weird boogeyman.

The *very* brief version is that Derek Smart was an old school goon who actually went and did something with his life, became a reasonably experienced game developer and helmed 3000 AD and a few other titles.

Came back around the time Star Citizen was reaching peak shill, Rich made a Star Citizen containment forum as a joke and gave Derek moderator, whom, in a twist of irony, turned it into one of the only palatable places to post about games until he couldn't resist being cancelled any longer.

As far as I know he is still fighting the good fight against Chris Robert's alleged vaporware.

Derek Smart also was a very belligerent man who would show up to any internet forum circa 2002 to have an argument if you just talked about him. Though, I think he's turned himself around quite well in the 2010's so he's def welcome to the true successor of SA and Portal of Evil in terms of making fun of weird people online.

People thought it was funny since Derek Smart DID try to create his own Star Citizen (aka a overly complex and basically not possible space game) but at least it was a product that actually came out. Dude seemed pretty down to earth after he got a bit older and calmed down.

Is the pre-alpha actually playable now? I only recently learned it was still a thing and they've bamboozled 300m out of hopeless nerds.
Its fairly fleshed out and has been for a long time. Ironic for this thread but I think most peoples preconceived notions about the game are just Goon crap from 2013.

I still wouldnt suggest buying it unless youre a big space nerd or have a squad to roll with, but otherwise its fun.

I still have a years old basic game pack, I just never expected to use it. I might check it out sometime then.

This is 100% true. Derek Smart curated a pretty good Star Citizen community on SA, even though he personally hated the game. He (shocking for SA) put his personal biases behind actually creating an area that was good for discussion. His Discord was much the same.

In the end, the goon whales who supported the game and their constant brigading to "save" their favorite non-game combined with abject laziness of some of the other mods saw the experiment end, but he was certainly a better moderator than kewpuh, videogames, or FAU.
Derek Smart was also the best moderator Something Awful ever had. Naturally they demodded him.
Yes, Derek Smart was literally a moderator on the SA Forums. He was made mod over the Star Citizen scam forum as a joke and in a bizarre twist moderated in an even-handed and temperate fashion.
His downfall began because he doxed a literal pedophile that had just been arrested for some heinous shit in ALaska and was able to connect the guy to Chris Roberts' wife as a Whale she personally concierge'd to including private emails and twitter DMs. The GBS, DnD and Games mods wanted him gone for doxing

Hey guys!

I would like to clear my record. You know, for the children.

I wasn't banned for "doxing". I was banned for "whatever-the-SA-shit-gibbon-of-the-month-said-I-had-done".

I had my own Star Citizen sub-forum on SA; much to the chagrin of a lot of lifers who apparently weren't famous enough to even get a byline without paying Lowtax 5 bux.

That sub-forum was all about Star Citizen. And seeing as I'm a Usenet refugee and infamous Internet warlord, I know what it's like to moderate a forum full of passionate posters and other occasional wankers. I was a fair moderator, and it was a fun sub-forum. All were welcome. To the extent that even the nut jobs from other SA subs (e.g. FYAD) would occasionally stop by - usually to make trouble of course.

I made SA quite a bit of money during the Star Citizen hey days because having that sub-forum drove all the Shitizens there. We'd lock down, then they'd buy SA accounts just to see what we were saying so that they could defend their game or attack us (even the Goon believers turned dissenters). Fun times.

Some of the Goons were righteously jealous of all this attention, while forgetting that Lowtax and I go way - way - back in the day. So guys like FAU and other mods who were no doubt Star Citizen backers would find every bs reason to harass me with temp bans, timeouts etc. At some point it got so bad that I just stopped giving a shit.

Amid all that, most of the Shitizens were scammers; and from time to time they would breeze through. Part of exposing their scams was finding out who they were so they would take responsibility for their scams. The most hilarious one was some wheelchair bound Shitizen who, for some inexplicable reason, figured that threatening me and others was a spectacular plan. So I dug him up, and posted his high school page. Boom. Me. Banned.

This went on for sometime, and the Goons who were gunning for me, kept reporting my posts. In the end I got de-modded and two Goon ex-backers, Beer4TheBeerGod (nice fellow), and Beet Wagon (the quintessential SA wanker) were made mods. It all went straight to shit pretty much right after. So I stopped participating and generally didn't give a shit at that point.

Amid all this, after parking themselves on the sub-Reddit that bears my name and using it to attack me from afar, one of the most prolific Shitizens who was also running a fake/scam website (I wrote a whole expose about them. Their venture collapsed almost immediately after) decided to take it one step further. Again with the threats. So I did this. And got the inevitable perma - for posting a LinkedIn URL. Yeah - really.

So that was the end of my SA stint. And I didn't even bother to ping Lowtax to take a look and make a decision, seeing as he was already the absentee landlord.

So that's the story of my SA ban. Any other story is pure and utter bs. In fact, as I have just now posted some, I have links to every single SA post that got me a time-out. Because I'm autistic and completely broken-brained like that - I keep track of everything.

As for Star Citizen, I am going to see if I can start a forum thread here on KF where I can track the ongoing shenanigans as I used to do on SA. In the meantime, you can read all my Star Citizen blogs over here.
