they were all optimistic about a glorious progressive future of liberty and democracy.

then they hold elections, and who wins? the muslim brotherhood, a hardcore traditionalist sharia law party. because, as it turns out, the vast majority of egyptians are NOT progressive inner city dwellers. so now the islamists have the power.

then barely a year later the army lost its patience and executed a coup to remove the muslim brotherhood from power. they forced president morsi out of office (he later died in prison) and replaced him with army commander al sisi, who still rules the country to this day.

Reminds me a bit of some of the shit I hear about the supposed "real" reasons for why china is amping up the saber rattling schtick as of late.

If what I hear is true then they are not doing it because the national leadership actually thinks they can stand up to burgerland and friends or even the pajeets in an actual war, they are doing it to appease their ultra-nationalist boomer population who react to absolutely fucking everything by screeching for nuclear genocide against any country that they think has insulted china, and there are enough of these specimens in low-medium levels of power to make the Hundred Acre Wood gang leery of stamping it out like they do any other social movement that threatens them, since it could wind up inspiring some rival in the politburo to try and make a move by co-opting the crazy nationalists.

Ofcourse this kind of thinking would wind up reinforcing and further radicalising this segment of the population since it would see itself being directly catered to, so even if there is actual logic behind this its a really fucking stupid strategy in the long term.
