Hamilton - Is it bad I liked it?

So is the musical cool to hate now since everyone remembered the man was a dang dirty white slaveowner?
Hamilton used to be super popular on Tumblr and then suddenly overnight it became problematic garbage to them.

Haven’t listened to it. I remember the year it came out and trying to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade and the talking heads just kept babbling to different people involved with Hamilton, rather than showing the damn floats and performers. I have to admit, that was the first year I remember them seeming to focus more on people utterly unrelated to the parade, rather than showing the parade. A couple years later it was completely unwatchable.

So that started my irritation with it. Then came the fandom drama. Wasn’t there a tumblrite who was chased off because they claimed to be HIV+ to write some slashfic about Hamilton characters who were HIV+?

You might be getting things backwards a bit, Puerto Rico residents were granted US citizenship in 1917.
Puerto Ricans were granted citizenship over a century ago, dude, every Puerto Rican that is currently alive is a citizen of the US automatically.
Damn, my mistake, I must have gotten the info mixed up.
I do know Lin’s father was once close to the governor of PR, who was caught on record admitting that the administration had to throw some of the supplies away that Trump’s admin. sent them.
I wish I could find the article that says it.

A large part of how well it will age is how often it will be produced after the sit-down and touring productions have closed up shop. (I mean, they have closed up shop, but, as of now, not for good, at least officially.) Will it be attractive enough for amateur productions and regional companies to license? That hinges on a whole host of other questions: Can it be divorced from its original staging? Is there room for reinterpretation?

Only then will anyone know for sure if Hamilton will enter the literature or if it was purely of its time and place.
To continue this line of thought (yes, I quoted myself, fuhgebbaboutit): the other factor to gauging Hamilton's impact and longevity will be to see its successors, and whether any of those will match its scale and visibility.

For sure, right now, there are probably dozens of writers mercenarily pairing historical figures with anachronistic musical styles and meant to be played by actors of any ethnicity. But these are just the imitators – I'm interested in the successors who find something worth replicating: exploration of theme, dramatic structure, use of music, etc. Only then will you be able to see what, if anything, Hamilton brought to the table that hadn't been done before.

The other big question is whether any of those will even make it to Broadway, or, if, in five years' time, Broadway will still be the goal. In the wake of rising costs, lowered risks, glacially slow development, streaming, post-COVID health concerns, and the post-George Floyd airing of grievances (legitimate and petty) that have dominated discussion in the industry, will Broadway still be worth the personal investment, or will smaller, more localized alternatives take hold, and can any of those create and sustain an international juggernaut of a musical?

Oh, if only. That’s one of the most frustrating things about live theatre, musical or otherwise, is how beholden it is to Broadway. But sadly, that’s where the audience is. There are some thriving pockets here and there (pre-pandemic obviously), but otherwise it’s a medium with a small number of practitioners and an even smaller audience. My local FringeFest used to be a treasure chest of locally made material, but now the only way one can even hope to sell tickets is if the show is a parody of something famous or if it utilizes some other gimmick (cult celebrities). Local live theatre has always been on life support and COVID-19 is the pillow over its face.

I don’t think so. This was around the time where the media lied about the current administration putting kids in cages, even though the previous administration. The creator of Hamilton then tried to lobby for a way to get Puerto Ricans that we’re here illegally before the territory was recognized to get them over the border without rule of law.
You know people who live in US territories are considered US citizens, right?

Aaaaand of course I reacted too quickly and didn't read ahead before typing this out.

Hamilton is for middle class teachers who think they're cool.

I don't watch musicals; I got dragged into watching it by a middle class teacher who thinks she's cool, can confirm.

It was very entertaining, which is 80% of the way to being synonomous with good for me anymore.

I'm on the fence on whether I give a shit about the obvious diversity pandering bullshit. On the one hand, lol even when they're trying to $current_year pander, they still made sure it was for the rap musical. On the other hand, I wouldn't have minded an entertaining history lesson, but instead I got this shit, which I have to actively try not to cache as accurate info for the future.

Now it’s problematic.

Hamilton never owned slaves, and leaned toward the abolitionist spectrum. That's not going to stop people from trying to cancel it, since Hamilton was a rich white man who worked for and with slave owners.

Since we're making musicals about fictional black men who were important to America's history, can we get a Desmond Pfeifer musical next?
I loved that show. Its basically the US blackadder. Also puerto rico just proves what many said a century and a half ago, the US shouldn't do colonialism, every US place outside of the continental US is dogshit especially the people that live there.

LMM is a piece of shit whose family fucked over Puerto Rico.

The only good thing about the musical was Renee Elise Goldsberry. Everything else is shit.

I genuinely don't understand the appeal.

It’s gonna be hard to make up rhymes for Pfeifer with that spoken p.

Don't do this please because people are going to go after Michelle Pfeiffer over this crap.

I'm tired of this Hamilton shit being shoved down my throat all the time. Like, Weird Al just posted a new video and it's a Hamilton polka.
I'm tired of this Miranda faggot being shoved in my face everywhere I turn. He's even in DuckTales as GizmoDuck and they made his feathers brown because he's brown. I can't wait until this guy gets #MeTooed.

I hate how the media tries to manufacture cultural zeitgeists.

EDIT: I reaalize that I probably won't be popular for wandering into threads and dissing the subject matter.

Yes they will. its Michelle goddamn Pfeiffer. Bow to your queen.
Nah I don't bow to anyone, least of all an aging woman who was fairly attractive like 30 years ago... but either way, nobody is going to tie Michelle Pfeiffer to Desmond Pfeiffer. I would have originally said that nobody could be that stupid... But I guess at least one person is. >.>
