You're just playing with me, right?
Oh you poor thing.....

Waaaaaaaaaaay in the past, some slave girl forgot to lock the gate and some pigs got out. The king was pissed and got a bunch of knights together to hunt her down. She runs and hides under a tree, discovers a thing, and becomes the first Titan Shifter. The King sees this, makes her his child bride, she has kids, eventually dies, and the king makes her kids eat her.

Boom, titans.

No, that is a thing.

The first titan was a girl who got blamed for leaving a gate open, which allowed some pigs to escape.
She ran away, fell into a hole..ate something off something that looked like a spine..became the first titan.
Then the king married her because "Holy shit weapon of mass destruction", fucked her till she shat out 3 daughters..she died and the King made his daughters eat their mother to get her powers.

This is what happens when you make a mystery box without knowing what the hell is actually in there.

PIGS.
FUCKING PIGS

some slave girl forgot to lock the gate
Was she even the one who forgot to do it? I thought she just got blamed despite being innocent?

Dear fucking god it's worse than I thought, I can't wait until the next series is released and my mates who have interest in the show see this, lmao.

Or has this already been shown in the anime?

Either way I'm doubling down on believing the writer had no fucking idea how to explain the existence of the Titans and made up some hilarious bullshit.

Does it even matter at this point?
I mean it makes it even more fucked up. Slave girl gets cucked by another slaves incompetence.

I've said it several times in this thread but.

The entire human race should have looked at The Writer actively avoiding going to that cabin for as long as he did and said "No fuck this shit, there is no way it is going to be worth the wait." the moment the fucking political shit started up with no sign of Erin getting to that cabin we all should have god damn known the dumpsterfire that was on the way.

Can I get a summary on this? Either I missed it, forgot about it or got it confused with the basement.

There are large chunks I am missing but the way I understand it is.

Erin Turns into Titan Shifter because he ate his dad and his dad was a shifter
Erin Remembers something was in the basement of his dad's cabin
Military goes out to get to said cabin, gets attacked by Titans.

Then like 100 Chapters of politcal stuff, the King isn't the real king of the nation, there are Titans in the walls..somebody gets their ballsack tazed, We meet the "REAL" royal family, We find out there are nations outside of the wall and there are other titan shifters....EVENTUALLY we get to the Cabin and everyone finds out some of the backstory to the titans.

THEN a time skip happens, and eventually Erin finds out how to travel through time using his titan powers..finds out that everything was caused by a fucking pig...decides "Genocide of everyone is the only solution."

There are probably a load of details I missed because I fucking noped out of the series as soon as it was clear that They weren't getting to Erin's dad's cabin in any sort of sensible time.

Was there any explanation given regarding the difference between a Titan and a Titan Shifter or why people become one or the other?

You become a Titan shifter through highlander rules, you Eat a Shifter you become a shifter (and get their special shifter power)
This is why Titans eat humans, they are hoping to eat a Shifter.

Edit : Yes this means Erin's father was a Titan Shifter, and Erin got his powers by eating his father.

But why did some people become Shifters in the first place, rather than mindless Titans?

You said the original woman titan who let the pigs out got eaten by 3 people, where did the other ~4 Shifters come from?

Attack
Armour
Colossus
Woman
Monkey
Ymir's jumpy ninja form

"Don't ask questions" -Isayama, probably.
..... I'd guess the three daughters each got three powers, then each had three kids, creating 9 shifters each with one power. Or at least it would be if he were smart about it.

You know, what makes it worse about the pigs is that there was some debate about whether, or not they were real pigs and not just another slur for the jews some other race because we never actually see what runs out of the pen.

For as much as I rag on pigs being the thing that caused all this, a good chunk of me felt that it was the latter because it would fit the racism theme this series randomly suddenly got, and because having genocide being justified because some kid accidentally let out some pigs two-thousand years ago is really, really, really stupid.

Well, I think we can throw all speculation out the window because I'm pretty sure this chapter just confirmed they were actual, literal pigs.

This the first time we've ever seen real pigs in this series. I can't think of a reason to show pigs now unless they really were the cause of all this, or it's just supposed to be a weirdass establishing shot of Historia working on the farm, even though Historia said she was raising cattle (which is apparently like the second thing Eren hates the most, by the way) and not fucking pigs.

I never was all that bothered by that backstory as the rest of this thread. the story is kinda dumb and it's... there I guess. I figured the pointlessness of some pigs getting out and that being why they were punished and why all this happened WAS the point. some pointlessly cruel shit happened thousands of years ago, titan power came out of nowhere, and things didn't get any better, shit still sucks, humanity sucks, lol nihilism all themes and metaphors copyright 2020 isayama publishing story of the decade scholastic book fair award winner. I think this is just his view of humanity and human history. a lot of it is pointless and up to random chance, and even when some big worldchanging event happens the core human experience stays the same in the long run.

now as overly cynical and teenagery as Isayama is, I don't think it's unrealistic for people to act the way the king and ymir did, I've personally met beaten down easily controlled people with no sense of agency like Ymir, but my problem is that after all the time it took to get there, it's boring. Ymir herself is boring. her story is boring. and like almost everything else post-liberio attack it felt rushed and underdeveloped to me.

when they reached the basement, learning what was outside the walls was at least kind of interesting at the time, I was curious to see where it went. but Ymir's pigstory wasn't even a twist or an interesting piece of worldbuilding. barely anything really happened and nothing changes. it doesn't even matter if it's logical or illogical, that part of your story has to be interesting bare minimum. or the lack of anything there has to itself be interesting and shocking. structurally, this was just "alright some shit happened I guess that's where the powers come from". I'm not saying he can't make some dumb commentary but he could make the story itself interesting. maybe he meant for it to parallel events of the manga or there's something else I'm missing but I don't see it. before it felt like were were building to something better when we saw storybooks referencing ymir or when kruger mentioned "the origin of all organic life". we did get to see the "origin" or whatever, but barely and it's not relevant enough to ever be explained.

I just hope the final conflict isn't boring.

I'm glad I never got into this franchise.

Anime really needed a big hit back in 2013 and I'm glad Attack on Titan helped goose the anime industry out of the mire it was in from 2009-2012 and lead to a renewed wave of popularity, but something about it just never captured my personal interest, I kept contemplating giving it a shot, but always wound up not doing so, looks like I made the right call.

I don't know why but I sometimes have a Spidey sense for when something isn't going to be worthwhile in the long term, which is why I never got into Game of Thrones for example.

First season was pretty good, but then they decided that instead of focusing on these giant humanoid monsters, let's focus on governmental politics and factions.

I dropped the show about halfway into the second season.
