You’re correct in that fundies themselves are pretty weak, it’s the opportunist that’s see dollar signs in “the movement” that are the problem. A true believer might attack you, but the opportunist will ruin you and your family to make a buck. You know what the Bible says about the role of women, right? It's not empowerment and equality to men, political or otherwise. If the WCTU held these premises the WCTU made basic misinterpretations. I wouldn't call them fundamentalists either...being openly Christian wasn't fanaticism in the 1920s, it was what you needed to do to get in the door with the average person.
Fundies are and were actually pretty weak IMO. Complaining about Pokemon and Harry Potter wasn't evidence of totalitarian fanaticism, it was a demonstration of impotence, retreating into obsessing over piddling shit because they'd lost every major culture war. Now, they can't even manufacture discourse over those things because the left has taken over that capability too. The "Lefties = Fundies" argument is flawed for this among many other reasons.
The two groups ended up in vaguely the same place discourse wise (obsessing over pop-culture minutae), but for the left this was a successful top-down cultural takeover, while for the Christian Right it was a failed bottom-up strategy.
