Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

You proved it happens, not that it happens in any statistically significant segment of the population.

It happens in 7.7% of cases requiring hospitalization, and many of the severe and critical cases (those that end up in the ICU) have it:

COVID-19-associated CAC is common, accompanied by high rates of thrombotic complications and associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Markedly elevated levels of D-dimer with normal fibrinogen levels are the hallmark laboratory findings. D-dimer levels correlate with severity of illness and risk of thrombosis. Aggressive VTE prophylaxis is paramount for all patients with COVID-19. The subgroup of patients with very high D-dimer levels (6 times the upper limit of normal, greater than 3,000 ng/mL) carries the greatest risk of thrombosis and death and may benefit from active screening and more intensive VTE prophylaxis. Current management is based largely on case reports and anecdotal experience, and controlled studies are urgently needed to better guide care.

COVID-19 is associated with a high incidence of venous thromboembolism, blood clots in the venous circulation, according to a study conducted by researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), UK. In a series of 274 consecutive cases of COVID-19 admitted to hospital, a significant percentage (7.7%) were diagnosed with venous thromboembolism. The most common type of venous thromboembolism, seen in 76.2% of these cases, was pulmonary embolism, a blood clot on the lungs. The research team found that the D-dimer blood test was useful to identify those patients at highest risk of venous thromboembolism when admitted to hospital.

The really severe ones need heparin to keep their blood thin. This isn’t just a little tiny bit of clotting. This is a ton of clotting. They notice the virus is giving someone kidney failure, and they put them on dialysis, and the dialysis filters clog up with clots. They see someone is having a stroke, and they try doing a thrombectomy with a catheter, and the tool clogs up with clots. They try putting needles in people to do blood draws and they try inserting central line catheters, and you know what? Clots.

Not just one or two big clots. All the blood in their body is turning into thick, viscous, syrupy goop. Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, or DIC. DIC happens very frequently in dogs and in cats, and in veterinary medicine, they call it "Death Is Coming" because of how poor the prognosis usually is.

@eternal dog mongler I bet you've seen it in some of these patients.

Case study on the first five patients put on remdesivir.
(A)

Cast study was prematurely ended due to four out of five patients needing new kidneys because of renal failure. Or, the 'cure' is deadlier than the bug.

Remdesivir is quite toxic, and so is Kaletra. HCQ can be effective, but only if given early, and it is hard on the heart. Interferon is the most effective, I hear.

Lately, I have been feeling pretty disappointed in how many cases are in the US (even though I am convinced that China has more but it will never be known). I feel there wouldn't be as many cases as there is if people didn't make this virus a fucking political slapfight with masks and protests.

That being said, Twitter is really getting to me to the point where I don't want to hear about cases in the US. It's just depressing to hear about how other countries are doing better and the cynicism from everyone.

I want it to spread everywhere so there can finally be no more new cases.

And hospitalizations make up what? Like 20% of all cases?
So that's like, 1.4% of all cases?

Guys, guys! I've discovered a terrifying new symptom!

Lmao that's actually pretty funny coming from you!

I don't give a damn unless they are comparing us to countries like Brazil or India.
I didn't give a fuck about comparing the US to a handful of cherry-picked European countries before this pandemic, and I dont give a fuck about them after.

I want it to spread everywhere so there can finally be no more new cases.
After I saw Governor Cuomo's press conference where he low-key implied the lives and futures of healthy young people don't matter, the one that was compared to Saturn eating his son, I have wanted to coof on that fucker so bad.

I feel the ultimate act of poetic justice would be for a healthy, young 6'4"+ man to grab that fat old geezer by his shirt and breathe sweet asymptomatic Wuhan Boomer-death right into his selfish grandpa lungs.

At this point, I keep needing more justifications to hate him so this will add to the fire nicely. Did he say this recently?

Nah it was like back in April IIRC

Can't say I am surprised. Fuck him for implying that. And fuck him yet again for shoving Covid patients in nursing homes/rehabs. My great-uncle would have possibly died in the rehab center he was in if my great-aunt never managed to get him back home.

I saw a Twitter post defending him doing that saying that "nursing homes should have asked for help" and I was floored. Fuck Cuomo stans too.

Well of Florida's recent 10,000+ new cases. There were 41 hospitalizations. So that's...less then 0.5%.

So what's 7.7% of 0.41%? Well it's 0.03157% of all cases.

EDIT: wait I fucked the math up.
