Did Cromwell count as right wing because he did it for Jesus, or was he Proto-Stalin because of how he consolidated power and held a show trial to kill off Charles II?
It's kind of weird that religion has become seen as a "right wing" thing purely because the religious Republicans of the nineties were heavily Christian. (Well that and that the left has successfully redefined the left-right divide to mean "left=good, right=bad", and obviously religion is bigoted and evil unless it's a glorious brown people religion and thus really just a "spirituality".) While leftist philosophies are often quite hostile to organized religion, that's generally only because they don't want the State to have the competition. But if the Church is the State, then it's even easier to institute a collectivist (and therefore left-wing) mindset where there is no identity outside of the Church-State and everything you do is meant to further the cause of the whole.
