It's kind of weird that religion has become seen as a "right wing" thing purely because the religious Republicans of the nineties were heavily Christian. (Well that and that the left has successfully redefined the left-right divide to mean "left=good, right=bad", and obviously religion is bigoted and evil unless it's a glorious brown people religion and thus really just a "spirituality".) While leftist philosophies are often quite hostile to organized religion, that's generally only because they don't want the State to have the competition. But if the Church is the State, then it's even easier to institute a collectivist (and therefore left-wing) mindset where there is no identity outside of the Church-State and everything you do is meant to further the cause of the whole.

Religion, like a lot of things, is tied to resource level. Wealthy urban intellectuals are more likely to reject religion because they have science and technology to keep the vagaries of Nature (like disease and starvation) at bay. They also don't need to have as many kids as the peasant farmer needs, so Birth Control is a lot more attractive to them. Modern Conservatives have a lot more liberal attitudes than their counterparts in the past did, thanks to technology making their lives easier too, but they're still more likely to be religious, since life is tougher out in the sticks than it is in the cities.
