Were his ventures obnoxious at times and abject failures at worst? Of course, but he still 'matured' as a content creator and tried to make new stuff. That's infinitely more effort than what Greg ever tried to do.
What's more, Shane himself never actually did anything to the same magnitude that Greg has.
