You're all missing something here.

The area in the circle is believed to be silt buildup. Now, most dams have methods of dealing with silt, but given China's safety standards, I wouldn't be surprised if those systems either aren't in place or have broken down. What if they aren't pumping out more water because they CAN'T? Also, what if that water height figure isn't taking into account a silt buildup at the base of the dam? Another thing, what would the stresses of silt buildup do to a dams structural integrity?

Check out the garbage buildup near the side of the dam. Nasty.

Edit:I almost didn't notice this. Take a look at this road on the left of the image

Now take a look at where it was previously from a different angle.

I think this flooding is much higher than the reported numbers by this point.

Xinhua News (the source quoted) is reporting that the number was 61k at 8 pm on the 18th, but reduced to around 46k by 8 pm on the 19th (about 16 hours ago, I believe). At least that's what I read on their English site. (archive) It didn't mention the structural compromises anywhere that I could find on there, so either it's been hidden away from English speakers or I'm just shit at finding things on their crappy site.
Gotcha. Yeah, I could not find the source for the text quoted in that image either. Regardless, I don't think the dam is on the brink of busting yet. Supposedly it operated at full capacity, all 175m, for a while in 2010 under normal circumstances. Here's a crappy image from an archived puff piece.

EDIT: More low res images of the dam at full capacity in 2010, if it interests anyone.

We'll see what the rest of this rainy season brings.

Silt build up uas actually been something western engineers have bitched about for years when it comes to the 3 gorges dam. All the way back to start of the project the CCP was warned such a massive barrier will inevitably lead to build up. And even a cursory google search shows the CCP has every couple of years or so "beaten the silt problem". Apparently it's a problem they need to beat quite regularly.

This could be catastrophic if they are lying about it. At the low end, sediment build up reduces the ability of the spillways to release pressure from the reservoir. At the worst end, the backlog delta sediment pile could slip in an underwater landslide, sending a sudden tsunami of Force against the Dam Wall itself which is already strained to capacity

Strong 5 to a light 6 at best. Strong 8 at worst.

Agreed- but the bigger impact is that China will be looking for more foreign outlets to channel nationalist focus away from the CCP as a result of these recent events.

I definitely think that foreigners (i.e. ESL teachers) should be immediately thinking of an exit strategy to keep handy on a moment's notice.

On another front- the sides are being drawn in the China-USA debate over Taiwan:

You know, if any of them do fail and kill a bunch of people it will rocket up the number of people killed by "green" technology. I remember arguing with someone, years ago, that for all its faults nuclear power has killed far fewer people than say - coal. And of course solar panels, until they are made domestically (and perhaps with different materials) are an environmental disaster.

We could shout to them: Nice try fellows for a diversion. Close but no cigar.

@jje100010001 I wouldn't be surprised that once the dam breaks, they say the Marines placed explosives on there to cause the destruction. Or they have footage of Donald Trump doing said action on video.

This! Btw will they blame Mossad as well?

Not to blunt the doomchat, but I recall 4chan sperging in a similar way in 2017 over California's Oroville dam. Similar stress issues and flood gates being opened, I think a town or two was also evacuated. Interesting to follow along, though.
You didn't follow up on that did you? The DWR was an hour or two from breaching the emergency spillway and punched a 300' deep trench in the main spillway.

I remember discussion of the emergency spillway, and the conversation petering off once the water levels stabilized. Not saying it wasn't a dangerous event, but I'm not at the level of "inevitable failure" for 3GD just yet.

China is officially saying "the flood is safely past" https://twitter.com/XHNews/status/1285216832220098561

I have no idea what to make of that.
