Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

106% as in "expected 100, got 206" or 106% as in "expected 100, got 106?"

Because the former is, well, ok. The latter is a who the fuck cares moment.
106%, not +106%.
Percent of expected deaths is the number of deaths for all causes for this week in 2020 compared to the average number across the same week in 2017–2019. Previous analyses of 2015–2016 provisional data completeness have found that completeness is lower in the first few weeks following the date of death (<25%), and then increases over time such that data are generally at least 75% complete within 8 weeks of when the death occurred.
So they say it increases, but it has also decreased. Lots of deaths getting moved around.

And 8.9% of deaths "involved" COVID, for what that's worth.

Only the likeliest off fucking scenarios there.

Dude, I get the fact that contrarianism is a time-honored part of Kiwi-ing, since there's a need for us to question effectively everything and it's important to take alternative perspectives into account (this is basically Dyn's thing), but I don't fucking understand this from you. We've confirmed, on multiple occasions:

implying "nooooo you can never quarantine anyone, that's how hitlers get made!!11" isn't equally retarded. it's almost going like off on extremes and arguing in bath is stupid no matter which side you're on.

Because it is a concern with influenza, Dutch physicians investigated their COVID patients for fungal infections. They found invasive pulmonary asperilligosis (IPA) in COVID resembles IPA in influenza. It's associated with longer ICU stays and they recommended antifungal treatments. Curiously, they were treating their patients with hydroxychloroquine, which everyone in the world knows is completely useless in all cases.
A lot of respiratory Viruses do increase susceptibility to secondary infections - there’s a paper I posted ages back showing that a different coronavirus infection leads to increased ability of bacteria to bind respiratory epithelium. It’s possible that a similar thing is happening here - the initial infection allows a secondary to take hold, rather than a system drop in immunity.
It should certainly be investigated, mind. On an anecdotal note after I’d got over the worst of it I picked up a really nasty infection and I’m seeing that as well in others I know who’ve had it and recovered. . Lots of strep, for some reason

So you'd be okay with someone with ebola standing in line next to you in the supermarket? I am guessing you wouldn't be
Because a disease that makes you painfully bleed out and kills pretty much everyone half the time is the same as a disease that only kills the elderly and to have the same chance of dying as an ebola patient you need to be a 90 year old with AIDS (according to the stats on who dies). What a strawman.

You don't quarantine the healthy and treat them as equivalent to the sick when you have an epidemic this minor. And yes, this is "minor" since the death rate is less than 1% and mostly kills the elderly, obese, and infirm. When I heard China locking down Wuhan and other cities in Hubei I thought it was China being China and couldn't imagine it coming to even Europe, let alone the US. And lo and behold, the lockdowns happened here, with highly questionable science as the justification. And just abject stupidity, like how only now do you have to wear a mask in public, unlike back in March or April.

There's a ton of diseases you can pick up from a hospital stay.

What number of cases?
What percentage of patients?
For how long?

It makes sense that a compromised immune system would open the door for secondary infections. Shit, going to the hospital and getting a secondary infection for what would have been a mild wound (looking at you, MRSA) is not unheard of.
However, for COVID to be just like HIV/AIDS, it would have to produce a long-lasting state of immune deficiency. Based on the cycle of infection (exposure/uptake -> incubation period -> peak infection -> antibody/T-cell counter-attack -> virus purged from system), COVID would not work like HIV/AIDS which basically stays in your system forever and without constant treatment the viral load only increases more and more.

AIDS is also a reverse-transcribing retrovirus while COVID is an RNA-encoding RNA virus. The two are in different kingdoms (Pararnavirae vs Orthornavirae), so they are about as similar to one another as fungi and animals. Their function of replication is also different, with retroviruses being a near-permanent infection while RNA viruses are temporary.

Except that the idea that "Your rights/freedoms/liberties come second to the Greater Good/Society/Public/etc" literally is how authoritarian governments come about.

I mean not all, because you still get warlords like Genghis Khan who dont care about "muh society" and just want to rule for themselves; but generally speaking "You > Us" is the heart of authoritarian thought.

Thanks for the intellegent breakdown

Thats why they call it a novel virus..we dont know what the fuck it does yet.

You seem to have to have done your homework. Good post

yeah, we totally knew from the very beginning what a nothingburger it is, especially since all we had to go on was a nation known for it's posturing voluntarily wrecking their economy for some reason while doing their best baghdad bob impression.

again, arguing while conflating shit that happened over months when hindsight is 20/20 is retarded. and if you didn't notice, most "healthy" people with common sense tend to quarantine themselves because the last thing they want is getting sick or give it to someone they care about. even more so when the average notion is "LAWL IT'S JUST THE FLU BRO LET ME COUGH ON YOU" and there's fuck all info available what the shit even does.
there's a time and place for restrictions, just as there is a time and place to drop them. just because officials are retarded (who knew, right?) it doesn't mean you can never ever use certain measures when the circumstances are completely different.

Except that the idea that "Your rights/freedoms/liberties come second to the Greater Good/Society/Public/etc" literally is how authoritarian governments come about.

maybe in bizarro world which isn't full of dipshits and retards you have to take into consideration. might as well tell me communism will work if you just believe strong enough.
if you have a perfect solution for asymptomatic carriers with an incubation period of several days leaving a hot zone possibly traveling halfway around the world in a few hours and coming in contact with hundreds of people while upholding MUH RIGHTS I'm all ears.

That's easy. Unless it's legit, pants shittingly dangerous, roll with the punches and deal with it. The world isn't your hugbox and you aren't guaranteed shit in terms of safety.

Also, maybe consider not cutting hospital capacity to the bone because an MBA told you to do so. Actually, if an MBA so much as looks at you, SOP for CIA Niggers apply -run them over with your car. That's what you gotta do.

Calling all EUfags! calling all EUfags! whats the reaction of the media to the EU corona help Summit in your country?

You are acting like thats the only fucking evidence. There are so many articles about lung scarring and coronary calcification in even asymptomatic people. Its all over the fucking internet. Oh and because its a Coronavirus like the common cold the antibodies dont last. So guess what? You will get infected again and again and more damaged.

Now you see why the rest of the world is welding people in houses and yet we cant agree on fucking masks

You falsely said 99.9% of people will be fine when the evidence is fucking pointing to a major fucking catastrophe taking shape right now
Fucking, fucking, fucking fucking, fucking, fucking. Wow you like to say "fucking" a lot. Lol

Do the "experts" realize this crisis has created more antivaxxers than they tried to destroy? Putting a gun to the human race's head and saying "Take the shot or everything will be banned again and again, forever" is not going to convince people. In fact, some would rather check out permanently than live under the "safety" of Flu World Order.

Another crossover with the Marxist Race Riots thread.

Does "we're holding your kids' education hostage" count for anything in 2020?

Basically, the known-communist (check out those fucking shirts) LA Teacher's union wants:
  • Their not-communist-pozzed competition forcibly shut down (you aren't allowed to choose to go to a school that isn't the public school).
  • Police defunded (of course)
  • Medicare-for-all socialist healthcare
  • An anti-wealth tax
  • Free housing / the abolishment of rent (and thus, private property) for everyone
  • Free gibs for illegal wetbacks
  • And Federal gibs for their schools.
Unfortunately their State will seriously consider their demands, but I believe the correct move here would be to just fired all the teachers to break the back of that Union. Yes, it would cause a void in education, but on a 1 vs 1 decision I think the consequences of doing that are genuinely better than the consequences of capitulating to this.

Fuck yeah it is. But we are on this forum.

Public faith in 'science and academia' is likely at a lower low now than it has been anywhere this side of WWI. That isn't to say that the public has lost faith in the core principals of the scientific method and all of the good stuff, but rather that the structural institutions that claim power based on science are seen as being as corrupt as a 15th century catholic church. Those that pay little attention already see blatantly politicized science and censored subjects all the time, and those who pay even more attention know about how certain subjects will quickly get people blacklisted to never receive grants again. Dive in further and it doesn't take long to find subjects where every single study reeks of data manipulation on the front end in order to create some desired result. Cherry pick your data sets well enough and you can give the money people exactly the scientific result they ordered, no matter what it is. Those willing to do so get wealth and power and fame, those unwilling to do so will be labelled with some evil label and blacklisted forever.

Martin Luther was a christian, and anti-vaxxers are, by and large, believers in the core tenants of science.

We are far overdue for having someone nail some complaints in latin on the door to the local laboratory.

Had someone on my Facebook page describe germ theory as unproven....and while the definition of a theory specifies that nothing can truly be proven, germ theory's likelihood is re-enforced time and time again through experimentation.

I voted for "H" on this poll, because I believe, and I'm sure many of you will agree, that North Korea is being absolutely decimated by this virus, no matter how much their Dear Leader (who may well have succumbed to it himself) denies it. Millions of people, immune-deficient because of semi-starvation and crowding, and did nothing wrong beyond being born in the wrong place? I'm sure the real news will eventually get out with defectors in the future.

Did a brief stint in academic science. Virtually everyone in the rank and file research trivialities in cash cow subjects like AIDS, cancer and addiction. Even before I started questioning "the Narrative" my thought was "We have thousands of full time researchers and doctors working on cures round the clock; why haven't we got cures yet?"

When I still listened to Joe Rogan I recalled he liked having doctors and scientists who were researching interventions not reliant on Big Pharma. My own aunt, though an MD and a psychiatrist has gotten all-in on alternative medicine.

This is america (well for me it is)

Vaccines are completely voluntary. Nobody will force anyone to take it. I certainly wont until a few months have passed
