The defendants filed a motion to have the lawsuit thrown out under the TCPA, which is the Texas anti-SLAPP law. SLAPP stands for Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, so filing this motion was basically the defendants saying "this lawsuit is being filed not because we did any actual harm but just because the plaintiff wants to shut us up and therefore is a violation of our first amendment rights." The judge assigned to the case upheld the motion, stopping the lawsuit from continuing. Vic's team almost immediately filed an appeal on the grounds that the evidence in their filings met the threshold for proving that their case was legitimate, but in the meantime there were hearings to determine how much Vic would have to pay in defendants' attorney fees. Funimation's and Marchi's lawyers filed relatively normal fee requests but MoRon's team filed very high requests that blatantly seemed to target the amount that the GoFundMe has earned (they mentioned the GFM several times in their filings). The judge had none of this and assigned them a more realistic fee amount, but they have filed appeals seeking more money. In the meantime the appeals court has set a hearing for September where they will either affirm the judge's acceptance of the TCPA motion or overturn it, in which case Vic's case will be able to move forward.
