I am hoping that you can help us with an investigation the New Zealand Police are working on.

On 15 March 2019 there was a shooting in New Zealand with multiple fatalities at two mosques in the city of Christchurch.

The alleged offender in this matter is a Brenton TARRANT.

At around the time of the shooting there were a number of posts and links posted on kiwifarms.net <http://kiwifarms.net> relating to the shooting and TARRANT

We would like to preserve any posts and technical data including IP addresses, email addresses etc linked to these posts pending a formal legal request .

Could you please advise what legal process you require for this request and also confirm preservation of the data requested pending legal process.

This type of request is boilerplate and is sent by cops whenever there is an investigation dealing with internet content. They do this because different websites have different policies on deletion protocol. So say during investigation they find some evidence at the surface level, they can subpoena for user info on those people later on. If a website has the policy of hard deleting content once a user deletes it, or to wipe clean their profile info once they delete a profile, then that info would be lost. So they send out letters like this to request that the website preserve data for a period of time, while investigators probe it further. Facebook receives letters like this every day, for example. I mean its clear he didn't ask for the data, only that it be temporarily held "pending formal legal request".

This is so common, the EFF even has suggestions for protocol when you receive these letters.
