He hates himself for slowly coming to hate his wife as all the stress paying for surgeries only delaying the inevitable, pent up sexual frustrations and endless abuse Mary heaped on him drove him to try his best to stop visiting her. Once his means of escape was stripped by Mary being sent to live out her little remaining time with him he eventually completely snapped and killed her which caused his mind to shatter and invent a letter tricking him into believing she still might be alive and sending him to a previous vacation spot which just happened to be an evil ghost town designed to fuck with him. After finally coming to terms with what he did and overcoming his demons he either kills himself or adapts the young girl Mary had befriended as a means of atonement.
Also it's only scary if youre 8 years old. SHII is all about the atmosphere and feeling of dread.

It seems to be the go-to defence of the Resetera jannies being totally unhinged, "we don't get paid, our aggression and mass-banning is because of that".
