Protesters burned an American flag and a Bible in Portland, Oregon, sparking outrage just as weeks of violent demonstrations seemed to be coming to a close.

For more than 60 days, Black Lives Matters demonstrators, including a “Wall of Moms” and a “Wall of Vets,” have clashed with federal agents in the city, drawing national attention as authorities blasted marchers with tear gas and the civilians at times responded with weapons of their own — such as feces, bleach, bricks or batteries.

Friday night’s demonstrations were largely peaceful, appearing to mark a break from the chaos as federal agents made a recent deal to allow local authorities to handle the protests.

But just after midnight, marchers were caught on video using the flag and holy book as kindling for bonfires lit outside the federal courthouse, which has been a focal point of rioting after the death of George Floyd in police custody in May, according to a news report.

“Left-wing activists bring a stack of Bibles to burn in front of the federal courthouse in Portland,” claimed Ian Miles Cheong on Twitter Saturday.

The post featured a video which showed protestors with “Black Lives Matter” signs tossing bibles into a raging bonfire. The video, which has gone viral, had more than 1.8 million views and thousands of retweets.

“Now we move to the book burning phase,” said Donald Trump Jr. in a tweet Saturday. “I’m pretty sure ANTIFA doesn’t actually stand for what they say it stands for. Maybe just remove the anti part of [their] name and it’s perfect,” he wrote.

The fire was later put out by members of Moms United for Black Lives Matter, who doused the flames with bottles of water and stomped on the embers, according to KOIN 6, a local CBS affiliate television station in Portland.

That doesn’t answer my question at all, but understandable have a nice day I guess
Why are you trying to find a rational argument in a pack of feral anarcho-communists?

It represents destroying the "establishment". That is the beginning and end of every thing they do. From setting shit on fire, to bricking federal police, to flashing their hoohahs at riot cops. The intent is the same.

Ok, the flag I get. But why the Bible? Like, what kind of statement is that?

"C'mon... start attacking us!"

They started bravely tilting at federal buildings to provoke a legal response from the feds they could spin as "fascism." This is similar. They think it's still the 90s and most Americans will be apoplectic that some colored cloth and some printed paper are being burned.

The school systems are mostly to blame for that. They don't teach modern history well if at all. So these people think that Civil Rights just happened 5 years ago and Evangelicals are looking to take them away.

Mind you this has been going on since the early 1980's.

Maybe partially, but I think it's willful ignorance, not just regular ignorance. There's no excuse for thinking the country is, culturally, the same as it was in the 80s and 90s. You just have to look outside your echo chamber and see the world as it is.

They stay ignorant because it makes them feel good to understand everything with a complete narrative. Their narrative is almost totally wrong, but it's hard to rewrite a fundamental understanding of the world, and they're narcissistic as fuck, and they're fucking lazy too, so they don't do the hard work.

And most people are similar, when you get right down to it. There are going to be people in a few decades who refuse to recognize the Right when it becomes an authoritarian, intolerant problem again, even when the evidence is right in their faces. So it goes.

Burning the Flag is one of the few proper ways to dispose of it. Same thing with the Bible. (And also, incidentally, the Koran.) So, aren't these folks simply being extra patriotic and devout?
I believe there's a specific procedure to decommissioning the flag where it's first folded and then shoved into a furnace. Burning it in an otherwise fashion is just an act of spite.

We knew you were godless america haters portland, you don't need to demonstrate the obvious.

I thought you had to cut the blue from the stripes, then burn it

What does the Bible have to do with the police? I must've missed the passage where it specifically endorsed the police force of a country that wouldn't exist for another 7400ish years.

Did these people just forget that a majority of black people in the United States are Christian? Even in Africa, it's like a 50/50 split between Christian nations and Muslim ones.

Many cultures already discarded their original pagan beliefs hundreds of years ago, yet upper middle class white people want to hang on to long dead pagan tree-worshiping religions from the stone age because it's the "alternative" to what their boomer Christian parents believe in. These same people also think that because natives 400 years ago believed in "two-spirits", that means that there are more than two genders and transgender people are therefore valid because of it somehow.

"There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus." -- Galatians 3:28

Sounds pretty anti-racist/-classist/-sexist to me. But I don't expect that this horde of Daddy Issues-plagued LARP-revolutionaries would understand that.

(And last time I looked, Christianity of all forms was booming in sub-Saharan Africa and the Far East. POCs make up a supermajority of current members of the faith.)
