I know highly educated people (Doctors, Master degree holders, JDs, PhDs etc) who can't pronounce words, English can be a bitch then when you add in foreign words like English ("the sluttiest of all languages"- a Prof I had) does a lot of the time, its just pure anarchy.
Highly educated people tend to be masters of their field, and everything else mostly suffers it be history, scientific concepts, etc. Ask an IT guy who works with MDs or PhDs how many of these doctors can't use a basic computer (even if they are a radiologist who works on a computer their entire shift every day, I was that IT guy once).

The push for STEM only will not help in this, as it elimates the humanties (the Western Canon will be dead either way it seems), It will hurt philosophy and history (which can be quite useful especially when it comes to law, politics, etc. such as the west was shaped by philosopheirs who influenced the creation of the US and constitutional republics), among other things.

A lot of the intelligence services in the UK recruit from people who study things like Classics (Ancient Greek and Latin literature/culture). In the US, it's generally military people or those associated with more social sciences. I always found that to be a distinguishing feature for how the two countries viewed the role of the humanities in the person of the civil servant. But people should generally be well read and practiced in different fields. Unfortunately, it's easier to get into professional pathways (e.g. law school) in America having gotten a 4.0 in gender studies than it is having gotten a 3.7 in Ancient Greek.
