The Matrix Was a Trans Allegory, Confirms Lilly Wachowski - we wuz dickgirls n shit

The Matrix was the quintessential 90's narcissist film, maybe only beaten by a shallow viewing of Fight Club.

It's always somebody else's fault that your life sucks, and there's a grand and active conspiracy going on to make you unhappy.

I guess you could say it works as a trans allegory, but it's a remarkably unflattering one.

"ZOMG FUCK YEAH TRANS RIGHTS!!!!1!!11!!! NAZIS SAY RED PILL CAUSE THEY SECRETLY WANNA FUCK BIPOC TRANNIES! BTFO FOREVER!!! HELL YEAH I CANT WAIT TO CONSOOM SOME MATRIX FUNKO POPS!"

Based on my idiot friend's reaction to hearing about the new sequel in the first place. I'm sure he'll be texting me about this any second now

No it fucking wasn't. It was a life action rip off of Akira and Ghost in the shell. In the nineties troons were basically unknown to eveyone but sailors on shore leave in Thailand.
Purveyors of anime, manga and especially hentai were aware of troons back then. Ghost in the Shell on the subject.
Shirow's GitS even had Kusangi griefing Batou after he unknowingly stole androgynous male body for her instead of the gothic loli body in Oshii's GitS.

I think you could say the Matrix could be an allegory for any impulse you have to repress. You live in a fictional world imposed by machines and conformity means security, and leaving that conformity to find your true self is a hard desicion not everyone can make, but by that logic, the movie could be about furries or pedophiles. The troon angle is no where in the movie. I dont think troons were the same back then, I dont really know when the "if you feel like a woman, you are a woman" came to be or be mainstream, but my guess it was not that long ago.

Andy and Larry (and yes I am dead naming them because they are dead to me) can make whatever bullshit claims they want, it's not gonna make me enjoy the film's any less. (genuinely like the first, enjoy the sequels as good drinking/drunk watching movies or for the action scenes)

He only became a tranny once he hooked up with a dominatrix (who had a history of spawning trannies) and started taking some ridiculous drugs when he was brought to orgasm.

I would love to be proven wrong here, can anyone point to a single sign of this fucker being trans before hooking up with some chick that was known for warping people's minds?
Humiliation fetishism is one of the many routes to trans. Get someone who gets off from being degraded and called a woman, girlie, etc and eventually they break down to that form permanently.
... I should write a post about the "multiple paths, one end pit" stuff for trans people. Might be good to have an in-one-place reference.

Dang it, he just had to come out and make this statement.

I mean, don't get me wrong, The Matrix is still my all time favorite movie, and of course it can be interpreted multiple ways (that was the point of much of the first film's themes and all that). But it really seems as though Lily here is pulling a retroactive retcon on it.

Hate to say it for fear of appearing "phobic", but those two have really never really reached the same level of quality after they became trans. Heck, I gotta ask, why is it that, when becoming trans, that has to solely be the one theme that the base ALL their work on, as opposed to just leaving it open to multiple interpretations or just sticking to what you do best?

They've never reached the same level of "quality" after the Matrix. Everything else they've done after the first one has sucked. V for Vendetta is an exception because that wasn't wholly them.

If you really wanted to put a transgender theme in something like the Matrix, you have the main character wake up in the real world as the opposite sex. And then throw in the twist that the main character has to appear as their Matrix sex when inside the Matrix. Brings up that issue of “presenting” in a way that can be easily represented.
They made Cloud Atlas in 2012, a movie about reincarnations, even more amenable to this, where they could do this cool, effective, and woke thing -- have different actors (of appropriate races) play the reincarnations and make the reader theorize and connect them, sperg about it and feel clever. Instead, they chose to do yellowface and knowingly took shit for it. The Wachowskis are cowardly hacks.

It's interesting to contrast it with another "hero's journey" series, Star Wars.

In Star Wars, Luke is the "chosen one" but gets his ass kicked, has a vision where he is the main villain and isn't even the coolest character, The Matrix reflects how much more narcissistic things had become by the end of the 1990s and it's no surprise now an extra 20+ years on from that things are the way they are today.

I still like The Matrix a lot, but it's no Star Wars.

Speed Racer was great and the last time they seemed like filmmakers with lots of potential and worth getting hyped about.

The Wachowski's definitely had talent and could have been contenders had their minds not gotten fucked over.

I had only seen Speed Racer once and honestly I don't remember anything at all about it.

I'm genuinely surprised Hollywood keeps giving these two dipshits chances. The first Matrix was a hit, and Cloud Atlas was surprisingly good, but every other film they've made has been a complete bomb.
All of their films have bombed since the Matrix Trilogy. No idea how they keep getting money to make they but it probably involves kneepads.

That's why death of the autor is the only good way to interpret fiction
Disagree, but it's definitely appropriate when the author is batshit crazy and making shit up. The author's headspace at the time of writing it is important imo if it lines up with what's actually written.

You should write this.

I still have a soft spot for the first one since it was the first dvd I ever bought, and at the time was pretty remarkable on a technical level. But aside from the freeway chase, everything in the sequels was terrible and I have no desire to watch them ever again. Plus, was anyone else bothered by the fact the so called heroes of the film killed dozens of innocent people without a second's thought?
