There are people brainwashed enough to believe this. The conservatives probably rebut the stats with other facts about how far-left political violence is swept under the rug and it is characterized as getting upset.

In the way they view everything, there's truth to this statement. But it goes to show you that we're not looking at reality in the same lens.
To them, antifa breaking shit and assaulting people doesn't matter, just so long as those people aren't dead. Torching businesses, mugging people, all that shit - remember their whole spiel about lives-not-property. Anyone that goes get murked because of this destabilization isn't "killed by antifa" by their metric, either; only a direct and clear relationship between some antifa numbnut pulling the trigger counts. And even then, as CHAZ/CHOP proves, they're all too quick to not sweat a death here or there. They also have no idea what Weather, BLM, the FARC, or any other number of the '70s radical groups were, because they're not taught in high school history, and anyways -those- groups aren't antifa you see.
Meanwhile, reported threats of hate crimes are absolute violence, bad speech is violence, and although this violence also don't cause loss of life they somehow must be treated as identical to murder. So it is that the reports of hate crimes spiking are tantamount to genocide in their eyes - as no-one would lie, and all hate crimes are white nationalist in nature regardless of muddling things like details to these folk. There's a handful of isolated and random deaths at the hands of far-right schizos and loons, and provided they say even just the teeniest little racist thing, they're a clear enthostate-now white supremacist.
It doesn't take an ophthalmologist to find this particular lens, though. Most of these dipshits don't own anything and haven't worked for anything - why would they care about property damage when it'll almost never affect them? Most of these people are anxious, nervous wrecks who've bought into the left-wing equivalent of batshit conspiracy theories as a result of their instability; thus anything that assails their emotions is a crime of the highest magnitude and any assault on their beliefs is an assault on their very life. The increasing levels of cognitive dissonance that it takes to insist that one is in the right as days turn to weeks turn to months and this flailing about seems primed increasingly to do nothing while the moment for progress has been wasted at the behest of some bored "radical" bourgeois - it requires an active, active effort to maintain that "I'm right" in the face of everything but twitter suggesting otherwise.
I maintain that, in different times, these exact same people could've easily been turned into literal fascist goons. So few of them seem to have any principle or understand what they're after, and it appears instead that they're chugging along full on nothing but self-righteousness. It's easy enough to manipulate that on its own - but I really do think you could bend these malleable people all the way to the opposite end of the spectrum just so long as you were cushioning their egos. It'll be entertaining to see if this generation follows in the steps of the flower children and becomes a whole crop of neo-neocons.
