And to answer your question, I'm more passive about the Confederate flag thanks to current events. I still think its image was rightfully tainted by that church shooting and the United the Right rally.

However, Confederate history is OBJECTIVELY still American history. And I cannot in good faith erase history because it's uncomfortable.

Unite the Right had very little to do with anything outside neo nazis trying to rebrand themselves. I could pound on for entire paragraphs about how confederate monuments and iconography were incorporated into US cultural practice as a way to heal the wounds of a war that killed 10% of the population of the United States and saw several of its largest cities at the time utterly destroyed by indiscriminate fire that was designed to kill civilians as much as soldiers.

Soon a group of black-clad anti-fascist protesters, also known as antifa, demanded he lose the flag, calling it a fascist symbol. Welch refused, and a tug-of-war ensued.

It ended with Welch taking a club to the back of the head, lying on the ground in a pool of his own blood.


Only Welch was not a Proud Boy, a Patriot Prayer supporter or among the other conservative activists who descended into the area that day, many from out of town.


He was one of hundreds of progressive Portlanders who had turned out to oppose the right-wing rally held at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

You still don't get it. "Fascist" means whatever they say it means. So there is no point in drawing the line around what symbols are defensible. The only thing you can defend is what tactics are allowed. Waving a symbol can never justify doling out a beatdown, setting someone's home on fire, hounding someone until they run off a cliff, whatever. Nazi equals fascist was easy. Confederate equals fascist was not so hard. Stars and stripes equals fascist was already established three years ago by this crowd. Whatever you are comfortable with today will be fascist tomorrow if they decide they want your house, your job, your spouse, your money, or just a chance to watch you bleed.

The only thing that makes sense is to stand firm on the principle of "we do not hit people because they have a flag we don't like."

I was never comfortable with the liberal use of a Nazi swastika outside of historical context. I'm not defending the mob for attacking her. But that's the modern left. They don't want a discussion, a debate, a conversation or anything that might actually make sense. Typically these are their only recourse when someone attacks their ideas because none of their opinions, ideas or notions are very defensible in the first and in most cases they don't really know what the fuck they want anyway. They don't really have any good comebacks or explanations so they immediately resort to silencing opposing viewpoints by violence if they feel like it, and if they don't feel like it they'll just ignore you or cast you out.

They are children in adult bodies. Actually, I think it's too generous to compare them to children. Children don't know anything because they don't have any experiences to draw from. These people can't even use ignorance as their excuse. Most of them have had the wealth of the Internet at their disposal for all of their lives, a good portion of them graduated from college, most of them spend hours each day agonizing over politics. They should know better but they still don't because they refuse. The cognitive dissonance will not allow it. They're also far more unreasonable than children, and their tantrums are more violent and destructive.

In short, beating people up or harassing them for wearing a symbol is retarded and the people who do it are retards who don't have any good ideas or arguments. Additionally, Communists bitching at Nazis is a textbook example of the pot calling the kettle black. Communism is still somehow around and throughout its entire existence has contributed more death, failure and human misery to the world than anything, short of maybe the bubonic plague.
