I recently described this site to a progressive friend of mine using that exact label. I said "it's mostly late 90's/early 2000's liberals, plus some WN who keep ranting about Jews". I made the distinction as being non-woke, and one of the examples I used was "they support gay marriage but think there's only 2 genders".

He told me such people aren't liberals any more, that "liberalism has moved past that" and they can't be classified as "the left". You aren't officially alt-right neo-Nazis (yet), but you don't get to be liberals if you're the same liberal from 20 years ago.

That's only 1 anecdote, but it's the same sentiment I've seen on social media as well, which has a decidedly progressive bent. I've sperged about the difference between progressive vs liberal elsewhere, and it's off topic here, so I won't repeat it. But that split, and the resulting war, is being manifested in the Democratic primaries and in the liberal city strongholds right now.

If you're wondering why Antifa has been spray-painting "liberals get the bullet too" since 2017, that's why. You aren't liberals any more. The left's fellow-travelers are kicking you off the bus, in preparation to throw you under it. Portland rioters vs Ted Wheeler is a perfect example.

That's been going on for some time now. I remember the years when I used to watch TYT, Secular Talk (because yes, I had my libshit years as well) and most if not all of their panel members described themselves as liberal. Around Obama's second election campaign they shifted to progressive. Turn to the years when I started to change my views (2015 -2016) and they were getting endeared to the term "democratic socialist". Now, in the current year, Jiimy Dore flat out calls himself socialist.

I think everyone here agrees for the most part, the disagreement comes in when we start discussing the root causes of the problems we all agree exist, or discussing the solution for it. It's a useful discussion to have, however.

You just get the suspect's consent and have them resign their property receipt. It's a hassle, but not that uncommon.

With so many different opinions and beliefs I'm proud to be part of a group that can have conversations that don't devolve into screaming at old ladies with walkers and tossing paint ...because we're all better than that.

Precisely, the left has experienced innumerable schisms, the most notable in recent memory being the split between TERFs and the 'you don't need a vagina to be a woman' crowd. They're like an ouroboros with how often they eat and attack one another. Unite the Right accomplished the opposite of its intent [with some help from the media and probably agitators] and produced the same exact sort of schism in our ranks. The riots seem to have galvanized everyone on the right, and for a while unified us, but the root of these problems and the solutions for them are where infighting begins. Not to mention our solutions are rather unpalatable for many. Tarrant created a bit of a schism too, but not nearly as bad as Charlottesville.

Part of the issue that cannot be discounted is that the shifting of the Overton window left behind a lot of classical liberals, libertarians, even socialists who don't follow all of this idpol bullshit. As a result they've found themselves in strange company with the right. They still hold their ideas and solutions dear, but they've realized the one fundamental thing that we all know regardless of ideology: the radical left has gone too far and it cannot continue if we want any semblance of a strong society, and if it does, it might end western civilization as we know it. Some of us vehemently disagree on social policies, economics, all kinds of issues, but the one thing we can all mostly agree on is that the batshit far left must be stopped.

If we can try to overlook all of the ideological disagreements for a while at least, we can deal with the red scourge and then we'll figure out the rest. Pretty much everyone here is capable of intelligent discourse and spirited debate, which is a bit of an endangered species on the Internet and has been for some years. I reckon we'll do fine coming to compromises when the time comes, however right now tensions are running high and everybody's angry so we're all more likely to lash out at eachother since patience is wearing thin. We need to deal with our common enemy first.

1a. Since we are living longer that means people are working longer. This causes bureaucratic inertia since the top positions fill up which leaves only low level, unfulfilling jobs.
1b. Specialization has left people unable to communicate with each other. We feel increasingly alienated from each other because we can't describe our problems.

2. Generational Cultural shift. The Greatest Generation (and the generation before that) moved out to the suburbs and was seduced by the materialism. Baby Boomers aped the virtues of their parents. "Frugality" became "cheapness." "Loyalty" became "everyone for themselves." "Legacy" became "take everything not nailed down."

Gen X'ers rebelled against the boomers, losing what little philosophy survived the boomers.

Millennials now have no philosophies or traditions.

3. Millennials are authoritarian little shits. Every liberal my age has an authoritarian streak to them. Not sure why. Might be because their parents were fuck ups as well.
