Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Twitter: “Boo Ren & Stimpy reboot! Why can’t companies fund independent cartoons that aren’t just rehashes?!”
A23: “Okay.”

Twitter: “BOO A23! Why can’t companies fund the cartoon I want to be made?”
At the risk of sounding like a cheerleader; for all the crap Vivziepop gets thrown her way, you can’t deny that she made the show she wanted from the ground up. That show’s pilot garnered a lot of attention and was able to get picked up by an indie company.

Assuming any of them actually believe these are better cartoons and it isn’t just hot air, what’s stopping from going that same indie route? Hell, if animation is no good, why not make a webcomic?

Well, it's not just pitches for shows where a Burger King Kid's Club crew of diverse youths go on MAGIKAL ADVENTURES, there's plenty of cartoon pitches under #bettercartoon focused on "strong female protagonists" and "furries doing boring everyday stuff".

Star Vs., Owl House, Regular Show, Regular Show band episode, and Gravity Falls/Owl House with crying.

I'm tired of reboots and I would be on board of the #bettercartoon idea if it wasn't because most of the ideas are fucking shit, no seriously, it doesn't take 5 seconds to see why they got rejected look at this:

A buch of little shits go to the forest to cry and something else happens, that's the pitch. Do they think that kids would watch this?
They'll forced the kids to watch it whether they want to or not. Because fuck what kids actually want to watch, TTG and Paw Patrol are evil! Crying forest kids are the thing you should watch dammit!

Jumping jackrabbits, these #bettercartoon pitches are a goldmine of artistic smugness and an amateur's lesson on what not to do! Some are so green they blend in with the bushes and others are pissy wannabes begging for crumbs! I wonder if we should make a separate thread for them all so we don't crowd this one?

There is one #bettercartoon I've seen that looks cool. The characters are adults, there's no calarts, an original idea that uses culture beyond a selling point, the men have actual testosterone, and the female designs would piss off SJWs/feminists. It's furry, but I can overlook that since it's done well.

Janie Lee worked on NuDucktales as a storyboarder which explains a lot. I know her for making "fashionista Steven" fanart before Steven wore a dress in the show. She's trying her shot at animation again with her webcomic Rockababy entered into the short story contest on Webtoon (one of the grand prizes is an animated short).

To top it off, animators in the industry are chiming in:

I genuinely hope indie animation is successful after all this.

Dana be honest, you had to take a ride on Alex Hirsh's dick to get your cartoon through. You should know damn well people have to work on projects they don't like in order to work on ones they do like. Try not to cut yourself on the glass house you're throwing rocks at. 🚬

Thanks, #bettercartoon, for reminding me exactly why modern western animation is such a joke in the first place.

Yeah, people are going to feel mixed about something like R&S being revived, and picking up a pitch is largely all about finding a diamond in the rough and weeding out all the rest (Sturgeon's Law does exist for a reason, after all), but is it really that hard to make a cartoon these days without any of the following?
  • a lazy-ass art direction (everyone else is doing it, so why not)
  • a half-assed overarching plot that exists just to blatantly follow the "muh deep lore" trend rather than genuinely wanting to plan out and craft a good story with good worldbuilding
  • lead characters whose defining trait boils down to "TEEHEE I'M SO QUIRKY I'M NOT LIKE OTHER GURLZ GAIZ TRUST ME LULZ XD"
  • "MAGIC AND WIZARDS JUST LIKE HARRY POTTER OMG"
  • forced wokeness/"muh diversity" for the sake of Twitter brownie points
  • "subtle" messages about how white cishet males are literally Hitler (again, for the sake of Twitter brownie points)
  • drawn out shipping/"will they or won't they" plot lines just for 14-year-old girls to vicariously live out their fantasies
  • EDIT: awkward insertion of serious issues (abuse, abandonment, neglect, troublesome exes, etc.) into a freaking kids' show that makes you question the mental stability of the writers (I'm not sure how I could have forgotten this, though in all fairness R&S is rife with this as well)
Like, at all?

I've largely stopped paying much attention to western animation because it just seems like they've gotten "lazy" if that makes sense or get caught up trying to out woke each other. Not much of the current stock of popular shows really interest me and I'm more inclined to just watch some of the series I remember enjoying from the past.

When it comes to cartoon reboots, I've grown increasingly negative towards the whole idea after what I've seen happen to series I once enjoyed. As much as I would love something like Cybersix to get a reboot there's no way it would be the same level of quality or enjoy as high a budget as the original. They would probably also draw it in a disgusting calarts inspired art style like what happened with the Ben 10 reboot, which I will be forever mad about since they cancelled omniverse and replaced it with that. They'd also probably make Cybersix trans or something.
I'm not thrilled about a Ren and Stimpy reboot either but holy moley, everyone in the #bettercartoon tag is so incredibly petty. Seriously, most of it just looks like a bunch of Steven Universe clones. Like none of them look appealing or different at all.

They all just look really standard aside from the ones with a dash of 'exotic' flair. And even then, none of them advertise the animation aspect of the cartoon, so much as the stated character arcs they want to write in them.

Most of these #bettercartoon pitches are just completely generic kids cartoons premises that have been around for decades, about kids with MAGIC POWERS who GO ON ADVENTURES!!...but with minorities as the gimmick or hook, and there's a sameness to the art styles.
Will admit that I like the art for the halloween inspired one but that's because I like spooky stuff, they rough outline of the plot sounds super boring though.

dreading over the possibility of woke calarts Kim Possible reboot. Thank god the live action was a pile of shit so we're probably safe
edit: I hate kigo shippers

Looks like the writers are going to have Luz and Amity be a couple. The ending reveals that Amity wanting to asked Luz to the dance, but was afraid too and in the end they went to the dance as friends. But it's clear the writers are going to have them be a couple in the future. .

When in doubt, simply yuri bait!
Meh, I always thought Owl House was one of the weaker shows to come out in the 2020 era and it seems they’re going to try to court the She Ra/SU fanbase as well as shippers. Thankfully it seems that Amphibia and Infinity Train are still holding up.

agree, Luz doesn't know about Aminty feelings. But I with out a doubt, bet that once Luz found's about Aminty feelings, their going to become a couple. You know way don't these cartoons deal with objection. I mean there was a lesbian i knew, who had a crush on my sister. But my sister is straight and she turned her down. Objection happens alot in real life, even to gay/lesbian people. If these cartoons what to show real world stuff like same-sex couples. Your also going to need to show objection too.
