Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I'm not thrilled about a Ren and Stimpy reboot either but holy moley, everyone in the #bettercartoon tag is so incredibly petty. Seriously, most of it just looks like a bunch of Steven Universe clones. Like none of them look appealing or different at all.

They all just look really standard aside from the ones with a dash of 'exotic' flair. And even then, none of them advertise the animation aspect of the cartoon, so much as the stated character arcs they want to write in them.

Most of these #bettercartoon pitches are just completely generic kids cartoons premises that have been around for decades, about kids with MAGIC POWERS who GO ON ADVENTURES!!...but with minorities as the gimmick or hook, and there's a sameness to the art styles.
Congratulations cartoon twitter you’ve made John Enter look like Gendy Tarkovsky

Notice how most of these pitches feel the need to bring up identity politics in some way. Is it really necessary to talk about stuff like that in a pitch?

There is one #bettercartoon I've seen that looks cool. The characters are adults, there's no calarts, an original idea that uses culture beyond a selling point, the men have actual testosterone, and the female designs would piss off SJWs/feminists. It's furry, but I can overlook that since it's done well.

Looks like furry shit

I would totally watch that! Since I love cats and funny animal characters. But I’m afraid people are gonna hate it because it has furry characters, why do people hate furry characters?

The #bettercartoon tag really is a unique brand of twitter pathetic; imagine being so triggered over a reboot that you feel the flex your pitch. Yet people were also defending ThunderCats Roar and calling others man babies for thinking it was shit.

The pitches themselves are bad. Granted, there’s nothing wrong with drawing from your culture in order to genuinely create good world building and adventures (see Amphibia). But there’s nothing genuine here, just people tacking on cultures to look woke and diverse while aping SU and Owl House. Ironically the “diverse” pitches are the ones that look bland and same-y; it’s so cynical.

To top it off, animators in the industry are chiming in:

I genuinely hope indie animation is successful after all this.

There really isn't much to defend. They didn't call in Bob Camp, who's been wanting to do a reboot of the show for years. He has ideas and he's pitched them to Nick. I think that should tell you what direction this will go in.

Better, if you ask me, to do something that would be for this generation what R&S was for the kids of the 90s. Not a retread - something that captures the spirit of the old days and translates it to today.

Well, it's not just pitches for shows where a Burger King Kid's Club crew of diverse youths go on MAGIKAL ADVENTURES, there's plenty of cartoon pitches under #bettercartoon focused on "strong female protagonists" and "furries doing boring everyday stuff".

Sweet mother, I hope this was meant as a parody, but you just DO. NOT. KNOW. FOR. SURE. in these times.

At this point, I'm just wondering who'll be the new showrunner and what they'll do to screw up the series. And more importantly, whether or not it'll be worse than APC.

But these cartoons are little better than what's currently happening, they all seem to blend in with one another, and I'm not just talking about the artstyles- many of the plot setups and themes are just so damn similar I'm surprised no one's called each other out yet for stealing their ideas.

I doubt it'll be as bad as APC was because it won't have John K. involved at all. So no forty-minute cartoons exploring his daddy issues.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I do not support the idea of a second R&S reboot. I do agree with the general sentiment that there’s too much rebooting and nostalgia pandering going on (half assed at that). I think it’s unfair that Camp, Dilworth and Warburton’s ideas for continuations are shot down in favor of soulless reboots no one asked for. And I wish we could have equivalents of beloved classics that capture their spirit rather than rehash.

I’m just pointing out the hypocrisy and laughing at how fast their opinions turned around for this one reboot. Could you imagine if someone tried doing #bettercartoon with Roar or She-Ra?
Literally half of the #bettercartoon pitches are Steven Universe knock-offs, Avatar/Korra knock-offs, or degenerate furry shit. It's a shame that CC did not talk to Bob Camp, but the nonsensical drivdl the Lovecraftian Horror known as the Twitter community is suggesting is making a second R&S reboot look good in comparison.
It’s the equivalent of those “fix it” posts where they redraw anime and video game characters as fat and ugly and then go “FTFY sweaty. I should be hired by professionals.”

I’m just glad CC’s Beavis and Butt-head will have Mike Judge on board. Not sure how Jodie will do.

It still doesn't look good but it looks better than this absolute trash. Does anyone seriously think we need yet another queer beanmouth shit toon about nothing?

I'm tired of reboots and I would be on board of the #bettercartoon idea if it wasn't because most of the ideas are fucking shit, no seriously, it doesn't take 5 seconds to see why they got rejected look at this:

A buch of little shits go to the forest to cry and something else happens, that's the pitch. Do they think that kids would watch this?
