Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

MSC has had a problem attracting and retaining qualified CIVMARs for decades. It is a vicious cycle: people can't get off and go on vacation because there are no reliefs, and no one wants to sail with MSC because they don't want to get stuck on a ship where they can't get off because there are no reliefs.

Does this mean that the military detachment onboard that ship can go ashore but the civilians from the same vessel can't? What?!?!

Precisely. Am guessing many of these CIVMARs must be pretty well along in their Civil Service careers, close enough to retirement that they'll endure it. But what will MSC do should there be a huge exodus of CIVMARs? Navy would need to ask either for contractors or more active-duty billets to man the ships. Just as fucked up as a football bat.

So what is the prevailing view on Covid-19 here on the farms? I haven't the time or energy to try and tease the truth out of the mainstream sources. They've been a mess of misinformation and mendacity for months, now. I know several people who have had it - one said it was a very hard fight, though he has health problems generally. The others just dismissed it as a bit of a flu. I honestly would prefer to get it now in the Summer than in Winter but the lockdowns seem almost calculated to ensure people are getting it in the worst possible time of the year rather than now.

I pulled up the official numbers from the World Hypocrisy Organization and ran a few basic calculations because I want to know just what we're getting in exchange for destroying our economy and social lives.

USA with all its chaos seems to have a confirmed case rate of around 2% and a fatality rate within that of around 3%. They don't make it easy to check but almost certainly those are the "going a year early" ones for the most part. UK's infection rate is less than 1% and has a fatality rate far higher than the USAs (as a percentage of cases) at 15%. That suggests to me that the USA is detecting a Hell of a lot more cases than the UK which has big implications for the infection rate - i.e. the UKs is probably a lot closer to the USA's than is reported.

I threw in Sweden because they are the one Western developed nation that hasn't done big lockdowns so far as I know, and their official infection rate is LOWER than the USAs. That's got to be due to different testing success rates. Their fatality rate is 7%. Angry Foreigner says they're pretty much euthanizing old people there, though.

All in all, the lockdowns seem to me to be doing fuck all. Am I wrong? Are Third World nations being wiped off the map by plague? With their far more impoverished health care systems you would expect that if Covid-19 is the calamity it's made out to be. Are they? Or are they handling it alright other than the collapse in their exports?

General consensus here is that Corona is about as bad as a nasty flu season, and none of those warranted lockdowns.

It's believed that the "experts" jumped the gun at the beginning due to the mysterious nature of the virus (at least when it comes to China being tightlipped about the damn thing and its effects), hence the lockdowns that were meant to "flatten the curve" so that hospitals don't get overwhelmed. A somewhat reasonable goal, but either due to fear or liking their newfound power, that goal gradually mutated into outright trying to eradicate the virus by starving it out.

What was supposed to be a month long lockdown kept getting extended by weeks, during which our economy entered a recession and millions lost jobs. Some tried to protest their governor's heavy handed actions that cost them their livelihoods, but got dismissed and ridiculed for "wanting a haircut" (as if barbers and hairdressers don't deserve a steady paycheck) and "wanting to kill grandma". Shortly after those protests, the BLM riots started burning cities down, and a lot of those "experts" and governors were practically cheerleading them despite going against all the rules they set.

Just when things were starting to reopen, the governors and "experts" were seemingly horrified about the virus "spiking" (something that was expected to happen back in the "flattening the curve" days, mind you), so now they're slowing down those efforts, reapplying restrictions, and even making calls for another lockdown. Such actions could send our already fragile economy into a depression, which will make things a hell of a lot worse for everyone.

So yeah, I think the response can do much more damage to our society than the virus ever could.

Because Americans are more fat and unhealthy. Part of the reason we can incarcerated against our will is because chain smoking fatfuck doesn't go outside.

Based on US CDC numbers, it was several times worse than the bad 2017-2018 flu season at its peak, it's still around a normal flu season peak, and it's causing about 5% - 10% excess mortality. Most of the deaths are the elderly or those with pre-existing conditions. Some states made this worse by putting sick people in nursing homes. In other states, it's barely noticeable.

All in all, the lockdowns seem to me to be doing fuck all. Am I wrong?
They're probably doing something, but statewide or nationwide lockdowns are dumb when the effect of the virus is not geographically uniform. Lock down New York City with 95% excess mortality, sure. Lock down Ohio with 2% excess mortality, you're out of your mind. We should have shifted from geographic lockdowns to protecting vulnerable populations long ago. They've destroyed hundreds of billions of dollars in productivity to save grandma, when they could have spent a few million to issue all the grandmas their own masks and bottles of hand sanitizer.

Their people probably don't live long enough to enter the COVID death zone.

Michigan, USA

No stats because there is still no spike in deaths. We're currently averaging 3 or 4 deaths a day in the Detroit tri-counties and 3 or 4 in the rest of the state combined.

The Bowling Centers Association of Michigan and five Michigan bowling alleys are suing to be allowed to reopen, after Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D)'s latest executive order keeps them, along with "amusement parks, arcades, bingo halls, indoor climbing facilities, indoor dance areas, skating rinks, trampoline parks and water parks" closed in the majority of the state. 45 other states have allowed bowling alleys to reopen. Professional sports have been restarted in Michigan, which includes professional bowling.
Bowling Centers Association of Michigan Executive Director Bo Goergen said:
“I can go get a haircut and get my nails done. I can get a full-hour body massage. I can have a dentist put his hands in my mouth... and now I can go to a casino – but I can’t open up a bowling center? Pretty frustrating.”

Amusement park and water park Michigan's Adventure has announced that its water park is actually an outdoor swimming pool, which are allowed to be open at 50% capacity. The on-land amusement park is closed, but the water park/swimming pool is open by reservation Thursdays through Saturdays.

And for Ohio, 66-70% of the deaths were from nursing homes because while DeWine didn't force people in, he didn't do shit about them. Even though we knew they were vulnerable. Ohio's average age of death is 80, and most of the rural counties haven't even hit two digits. Most of the deaths and hospitalizations are clustered around Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton. Cincinnati, for whatever reason, hasn't been hit nearly as hard. It's also the region most resistant to the mandates.

I've been pulling statistical data about once a week since July 4th (when all my friends yelled at me that we were going to have a death spike). So far, LA County (my primary area of interest) is continuing a slow and jagged drop in daily deaths, but overall US deaths are slowly curving upwards - but are nowhere near the initial spike. This makes me think the virus is moving through the country as people unlock and start moving again.

I agree with the experts who say this is a really bad bad flu season... perhaps 3x as bad as normal. This would explain full hospitals and stressed resources, while also not being as big of a deal as they're making it out to be. I've also heard it noted that a normal flu would encounter assorted resistance from a average population, who might have anitbodies from being sick last year; while Covid's new and has a completely fresh population to chew it's way through.

This whole shaming rant makes no sense since she works at a restaurant (allegedly):
First of all, I can tell that this woman works in the front of the house; and therefore has that entitlement complex. I've worked with dumb broads like this and I'll tell you they are the most irritating people to work with. For starters, most of the time these are the same bitches that come back, and ask the same question every time they are in because they never bothered to learn the menu. Secondly, even before the China-Virus, sanitation is a mother fucker. I have worked under chefs that will make us disassemble majority of the equipment every night, just to get the shit left over during the day, and if it wasn't perfect in the morning; Then your ass would be good as grass, because I've seen scores of people get shit canned for a bad close. The chemicals used to sanitize the silverware and the dishes are insane, and literally even say the whole, "bunch of hands" that touch the dishes theory is true, cooks, and chefs generally do something called "wash their hands" on the regular. I would sanitize so much that my hands are still ridden with chemical burns from the years of doing it.

Of course though, there do exist places that are fucking dirty, and generally awful. I worked in this one place that had oriental cockroaches that would scurry when it got real hot, generally I did my best to keep it as clean as possible, and keep it away from the product. Though, only so much you can do, and really it is only a matter of conscience. I ended up quitting that place after a few months, just because of how disgusted I was in the way the place was being maintained. OSHA and WHIMIS rules are insane, and when an inspector pops in, expect to have an interesting time. WITH THIS COVID SHIT, I can only imagine on how much more militant these people have become.

Obviously this chick is salty about having to still work during this, which I really can't blame her considering how bad business probably is, along with her tip outs. Though, she is really only working against herself if she is really going on the whole, gotta fear monger for the COVID nonsense. The China Virus doesn't even transfer via food, along with the whole afterlife studies proven that the transmittable factor was exaggerated. I would feel bad for this chick if her employer ended up getting wind of this post, because this is something that could potentially black ball her. Not that I am for cancel culture, I think it is cringe and gay. People should learn of the phenomenon called "The Anthony Cumia" effect, one day you are one of the most famous radio personalities in the country. The next after some jogger tweets, you are hooking up with lady boys, and are in Tunisian knife fighter rings, running a defunct podcast in your basement...

That's one reason I never understood how people freak out over getting haircuts, going out to restaurants, etc even with this covid shit. Those places are SUPPOSED to be super hardcore on sanitation in the first place and if word got out that they aren't sanitary, people can scorch those businesses via review sites like Yelp and even Google.

Dentists in the UK - NHS ones anyway - have been total cunts during all this. They claim they didn't have the correct PPE and reckoned there was a risk from aerosolized particles. People in agony have been told to seek private treatment. Funnily enough, some private dentists have been able to manage emergency procedures the NHS ones refused to. I've been horrified by their attittude generally, both to risk and to people in serious pain.

I speak to a guy who does tech support for dentists, according to him practically every dentist is a technically-inept moron who keeps fucking up their servers or PCs (a couple even got WannaCry'd) on a constant basis. I don't think he's been at work since the lockdown started, but considering how dumb NHS dentists are at the best of times I think people should go private if they can afford it.

I hate people like this. All of what they believe is so fake. They're all so fake. They have no consistency and just go along with whatever is popular without actually putting any thought into it themselves. While I believe this whole situation is nuanced, these people make me want to pull my hair out sometimes due to how little they actually care about anything besides what other people spew up nearby them.

"Everyone should have a right to healthcare! Free healthcare for all :feels:"
"Oh, but if you support this business or go there to eat after being locked inside for months on end you deserve to be refused healthcare! Which will cause you to die in my views!"

"I'm class-conscience! I <3 MARX!!"
"Oh, businesses should just shut down! The employees will be fine without a reliable source of income!"

"Oh, I'm an anarchist #FUCKTHEGUBERMINT"
"Noooo, listen to everything the government officials are saying!!! Trust in your government!!!!"

"I care about kids!!! Education is extremely important!!!"
"What do you mean some kids can't optimally learn in an entirely online environment!?!?! They just need to get over it! This is the new normal!"

"I care about people's mental health! End stigma!!!"
"Oh, you're suicidal because you can't make actual contact with other people or access your support systems! Stop being so dramatic-- do you want to kill grandma!? If you're that sad just call the suicide hotline!!!"

Fuck these people man.

They say that the Economy being in bad shape right now is a sign of capitalism failing despite the fact that it was the government who forced them to shut down.

Here in my state everything is pretty much back to normal so I cant relate to you guys but the people who are pro lockdown are crazy about it. A teacher I know said that another teacher showed up to school in a beekeeper outfit.

Came across this interesting article from an ER doctor: https://drmalcolmkendrick.org/2020/08/07/how-bad-is-covid-really-a-swedish-doctors-perspective
I am willing to bet that the countries that have shut down completely will see rates spike when they open up. If that is the case, then there won’t have been any point in shutting down in the first place, because all those countries are going to end up with the same number of dead at the end of the day anyway. Shutting down completely in order to decrease the total number of deaths only makes sense if you are willing to stay shut down until a vaccine is available. That could take years. No country is willing to wait that long.

Someone tell her the average student is more at risk of being sexually assaulted by their teacher than getting shot or dying of COVID.

I don't know if it's true, but it sounds good.
From March 1st to July 25th, in the U.S.A, there have been 576 pediatric cases for the Wu Flu that were reported to the COVID-NET. The hospitalization rate for children younger than 18 was 8 per 100,000 (0.008%). 69 of these children were admitted to an ICU, 12 of them required ventilation, and one died. For comparison, the hospitalization rate per 100,000 for adults is 164.5, or 0.1645%.

Yes, they are significantly more likely to have quite a few other things happen to them compared to their risk of dying from the Kung Flu. Children are so low-risk when it comes to this situation that it's almost laughable. I mean that's great news, but it's hilarious just how virtually impervious they are to the whole ordeal.
