Well it depends on which way the wrong fuel equation goes. Diesel in gas...drain it and you're probably good to go. It will cost money and time but that should be about it.

Gas in diesel, especially low octane rating gas, could definitely see you replacing non trivial chunks of the engine especially if it starts detonating before the ECU can take preventative measures, assuming the ECU can do anything about 87 in the tank at all.

That said, it does depend on the proportion. There is supposedly a technique of cutting diesel with gasoline in proportions less than 20% gas to diesel (the gas is a method of keeping algae from growing in the tank) which worked on older engines so chances are if they're topped up you aren't going to make much of an impact. Also emptying 15 or more gallons of gas into a tank isn't quick or discrete affair.

I liked the superglue suggestion for the gasflap/gascap the best.

you put fuel in a diesel car? It’ll run, then die, then you tow it to the show, then the tech will figure it out. Replace the filters, drain the tank and bleed the fuel system. Back on the road.
