What got me interested in weather/meterology in the first place was the 1997 Southeast Michigan tornado outbreak and The Southern Great Lakes Derecho of 1998. I think it was the 97 storm that I remember as a young kid being driven by my mom to some place and we ended up driving past some of the damage and it just made a mark on me.

I give it a 50/50 chance of making it to Lansing in terms of it being severe. so far it looks like its dying at Lake Michigan right now.

A Derencho's damage is mostly from straight line winds, granted tornadoes can form in them, but the two have distinctive damage patterns, Straight Line winds as it should imply the damage only happens to one side, or well say with uprooted trees they all fall in the same direction, a tornado would have a different pattern).

Yeah, it was young when explained to me, family still calls it tear up storm.
