Surprisingly humble for a DA.

In the jungle, neither side acted with a lot of restraint. For the Americans that mostly resulted in killing surrendering soldiers rather than taking on POWs as best anyone can tell.

As best I can tell, not a lot of people want to revisit the jungles of the Pacific though, that was a completely different ground war from the western front in Europe.

Part of the reason American soldiers in the Pacific killed so many surrendering Japanese troops is because, due to the whole 'bushido death before dishonor' deal, Japanese soldiers would often pretend to be surrendering until American soldiers approached, then they'd pull the pin out of the grenade. Eventually the Marines caught on to this tactic and basically started executing them. I know the Eastern Front was fucking brutal, but I still think the Pacific Theater gives it a run for its money. Terrible conditions with mud, constant rain, the local wildlife/insect life was inhospitable. Plus the military of Imperial Japan was fucking brutal, and in order to combat them effectively, opposing troops had to become brutal in turn. Many of the islands were also proto-Vietnam, with so much vegetation that you couldn't tell where the enemy was. Tarawa and Guadalcanal don't tend to get much attention but they were every bit as insane as Iwo Jima.

Those were taken from already dead soldiers. IIRC, the second picture is Vouza. He was stabbed with bayonets by Japanese soldiers and left for dead. He escaped from captivity and warned US Marines about an upcoming attack.
Well,
When Japanese remains were repatriated from the Mariana Islands after the war, roughly 60 percent were missing their skulls.

Yep, and well if one side willfully and wantonly breaks "the rules and customs of war", the other side will do so too.
Its more of a formal gentleman's agreement then anything else. The Japanese treated the GIs extremely poorly, and did the whole "fake surrender" thing, among other stuff, the GIs replied in kind in other ways.

pages ago some one brought up how durning WW2 Germany made a threat about using chemical weapons which prompted the US to start shipping some over to the European theater in case Germany did good on their threat.

There is also the famous quote often attributed to many generals "Never get involved in a land war in Asia"

Breonna Taylor is one of the few cases where she really didn't do anything wrong. The cops had bad information, they banged on the door and barged in without saying who they were, her boyfriend tried to defend them against what seemed like home invaders (which they were, I guess) and Ms Taylor ended up getting killed.

However

The protests should have remained peaceful and should never involve innocent people. I hope the rioter-terrorists rot from the inside out over this shit.
The police did knock, though. Whether they should have shouted “police open up” or something is another debate. Although if you’re sitting in a drug den and hear some hard knocks on the door, the first assumption I’d make is cops. Robbers don’t tend to knock (or go in through a door in the first place).

It's true. Go on Zillow and you'll see property getting cheaper and cheaper in real time.
If you have 30 years to waste and some spare money laying around, now might be the time to invest in some property.
From what I understand rent control in NYC depends on vacancy in a district remaining under 5%. If it goes above that then legally it ends. I can hear the landlords palms rubbing together from here.

I watched documentary on the military channel or something like 15 years ago that talked about one of the battles on the Pacific islands. Something about it lasted for 36 days straight. That was 36 days of taking constant fire. The american troops that they interviewed for the program said that it was so intense that they couldn't even "use the bathroom", you just had to pee and crap on yourself and keep shooting back. So busy fighting for your own life that you have to pee and crap on yourself, and now 60 years later there's an army of left wingers talking about how bad they got it.

You laugh, but those soldiers in the 40s (for the Americans it was mostly white men, yikesss) never had to put up with indignities like being misgendered. I bet that they didn't even have to deal with spotty wifi either back then.
