That part of the interview stuck out to me as well. I believe when an alcoholic's diet gets like that they develop a vitamin B deficiency and eventually get some form of early onset dementia. It's called Korsakoff syndrome and it sounds like Ralph may be on the path to having it.

Even if you fix the vitamin deficiency the brain damage is permanent. It's really bad news. You lose the ability to remember things that happened even a minute ago. You can still be lucid to some extent but you have no real idea what's going on, ever. People with this fake it until they can't any more.
