Can confirm, I did odd jobs for non-profits to bolster my resume with basic coding experience. Being in the Midwest helps too, since we have more whites here. There are some lesser known tech hubs like Raleigh that I suspect are still hiring plenty of whites. I have said this before as well, but if you have any ability to be in front of customers (not talking about consumers, but other businesses) and are technically apt, look into roles like implementation engineers/professional services engineers, customer success, software/technical sales. Those are the types of jobs that larger companies need, many of them in Silicon Valley. Plus most of that crowd is moving to remote work for more of their teams, so this is a great time to rake in the cash from those companies while living outside of the Bay.
Another piece of advice is to network because many companies will give an automatic first screening call to referred applicants, which lets you bypass the HR filtering process. Those same companies usually have referral bonuses for their employees, so it is a win-win if you do get hired.
