Articles & Happening Meta Discussion

Articles & Happenings is the third attempt at a news board on the Kiwi Farms. It is a cursed place. Every moderator who has been assigned here has resigned within a year. During 2016, the political crossfire was so bad it spread to different boards and culminated in me banning American news discussion entirely for several months. It has been deleted in its entirety twice. There is no actual discussion here, it's people posting garbage. It leans much further right than the rest of the site and doesn't particularly conduct discussion because dissenting opinions are dogpiled by a thousand memelords posting shit they read on /pol/ without any critical analysis.

The only rules that can be enforced are empirical ones with boolean violation answers. New threads must cite a real source directly and must use the headline of the article as a thread title without any editorializing. Articles must be archived in some way and must link to the original article. Replies that are one word or a reaction images are automatic one-month bans from the board.

I'm creating this now because it seems like this place is here to stay and is one of the largest areas of the entire site. I might as well throw in bare minimum effort to improve it. I don't even try to find mods for here because they will quit, without exception. I've added new prefixes ("Business" and "Crime") just now.

Discuss.

New threads should be made like this.

This board is plagued with bottom of the barrel clickbait that barely ever gets more than 20 or 30 responses. See: Almost every thread started by the users "Catparty" or "Arm pit cream". Most of these threads are faux outrage bait (or some other shit nobody cares about), which is a shame, because then real news go unnoticed, and there's no discourse of value happening here. A News board adds a lot of value to the site but not when it's filled to the brim with crap.

I don't really have any solutions. Maybe having a week or month-long cooldown after posting a thread would reduce the amount of garbage that gets posted. Alternatively reduce it to US politics and have Happenings be the place for world news. I dunno. All I know is that most threads filling up the board lately are absolute trash.

A&N is a very serious news source. Ban any fun thread. Only threads where I can rage about liberals are allowed.
The problem is that the opinion threads are 9/10 times liberal ragebait with predictable rage responses

Twitter Cancels X because Everything is Racist is not an original story. In fact, there's already a mega thread for that, but people refuse to use it.

My concern with that would be that you'd wind up having to hyper-moderate the board and studiously check every single article that was posted. Modern-day journalism is all but completely broken, so that's not a problem inherent with the board itself, that's a problem that's industry-wide. For every article worth reading, there's 50 more piles of horseshit that were thrown against the wall by some 20-something genderspecial that VICE lets out of their fag closet just long enough to eat some free-range food nobody can pronounce and pen up an article about why we need to jam the nearest candelabra up our asses or we're racist or whatever.

For anyone who's not aware, though, you can easily sort the posts in a forum by going into filters and setting the "Sort by" to "first message" and "descending." That way you're only seeing the newest threads in the order that they were posted, so you can see what all has been posted for the day, and skim past any of the ones you don't find particularly interesting.

I don't enjoy ragebait threads either, so I can understand the frustration, but I enjoy trying to excessively moderate what people can post an awful lot less. Besides that, we do have a megathread for clickbait, so if people believe that a thread is blatantly trying to clickbait people, they're welcome to report it and odds are that it'll get thrown into there.

wagglyplacebo couldn't ban himself from the entire site for (I think) 5 minutes, so now I'm just wondering if you can threadban yourself for 5 minutes, and if it works can you still moderate?

If it doesn't work ban @Fubby and @AprilRains for 5 seconds for a laugh.

This is the second time you've made a desperate bid for my attention. Is there something you need to tell me?
Yes, there is something I need to tell you. I think you're a good contributor to the Farms, and please keep being as friendly as you are, friendo. ❤
