Anime News Network (ANN), Christopher Macdonald & Co. - "Unbiased" Reporting on All Things Anime Related By Snobbish Quebec-Based Web Company. Acquired by Kadokawa.

You go for all black "anime" you get Boondocks.

You go for social justice messages, you get High Guardian Spice.

You combine the two and you get an abomination before God.

Boondocks couldn't never be made today. So much of it's humor stemmed from self-criticism of black culture and Aaron's personal hatred of BET and similar 'black targeted'. Just look at how much shit Terry Crews got for saying "be careful Black Lives Matter doesn't turn into Black Lives Better" and then like the very next day a bunch of black singers proved him right. Complex looks on issues aren't allowed anymor

When Japan puts in a black characters, it's not to be progressive, it's because they thought something about them was cool, and don't care if it's stereotypical like making them a gangster or a rapper like in Shaman King or Naruto. Of course, it's problematic and the ANN types don't like those depictions, but funnily enough tons of black people are weebs. Where as most American depictions do their damnedest to avoid any kind of negative stereotype, which is why so many of them end up being 'nerdy black guy' because anything else would be deemed offensive. I miss Static Shock, as cheesy as it could get sometimes, it felt far more natural and real than anything else.

Literally the only black characters allowed are the ones who act completely white and would be beat up by actual black people in school.

The reason why anime is resistant to to the rampant garbage infecting most entertainment nowadays is because it comes from a compartively conservative, homogeneous culture. They don't walk on eggshells because they don't give a fuck.

The localizers are then put in a dilemma. Either faithfully translate something with themes they hate, or splatter the source material with their own messages and suffer weeb rage.

Did you just compare not supporting Funimation and Crunchyroll to anti-vaxxers?

Hey Sevakis, fuck you.

It's the problem Gabe Newell talked about almost 10 years ago. Piracy isn't really a pricing problem. Most people can afford to spend $10 a month for whatever product/service they find valuable.

Piracy exists because of a failure in service. @quickthrowaway mentioned his above. KissAnime offered (almost?) all anime, in one location, with minimal fuss, accessible anywhere you have internet connection, without regional fuckery.

When you have that, the service KissAnime offers is more valuable than the services Funimation/HiDive/Crunchy/etc offer. If KissAnime was somehow able to become official, they could charge $20 a month and people would jump on that I'm pretty sure.

You know, I have to agree with Justin. Everyone who has looked at the data and understand how things work are rolling their eyes at ANN and friends.

And you know what? Pin this all on me, because I'm going to go GRAVE DIGGING.

Because ANN totally doesn't have a silver tongue! Right, Bonsey? "NOPE, ALL THOSE YEARS OF TRYING TO BE AN ELITE ANIME CONNOISSEUR AND SHITTING ON EVERYONE BECAUSE OF INSULAR PETTY CLIQUE FAGGOTRY, COMPLETE CULTURAL IGNORANCE, AND MOUTHING IT OFF ON AN ONLINE NEWS SOURCE WAS ALL A JOKE! HA HA HA! WHOOPS! DISREGARD THAT, THAT'S JUST A SILVER ASSPLUG WHEN I WAS STILL TOGETHER WITH HOPE! HAHAHA!"

A joke of major bad taste aside, I think we should also include OCDMedia in the regard that they are also not doing much for the anime industry. That Lupin the 3rd DVD essay sounds more autistic than it's worth.

Not just Gabe but CDProject Red figured this out too back in the 90's. When the DRM started shifting from Manual DRM (Like the ole Gold Box/SSI D&D games) to a more digital version it made it hell for them to localize the games. It was just easier for people to pirate the games instead of dealing with the DRM if they got hit with its stupidity to get maybe "patched".

At least someone's doing something constructive, and with their own sourcing, and black people at that. If Saturday AM gets all politicized and virtue signally, like let's say, super pro BLM Antifa or Pro SJW or says something about Vic, there's the blip on the radar, otherwise, ANN's just backhitching and leeching off of hard work like they've always done. For SatAM, no such thing as bad press, I suppose. At least they're not Fantasy Soft Entertainment-ing themselves.
I follow the creator of one of their series, Apple Black, on social media. He's alright guy, mostly posts tutorials and progress videos on his comic. He had one video on BLM about 2 months ago where he talked about his experiences (he's Nigerian and moved to the US early in life) but that's about it.

Hey Sevakis, fuck you.

Character goods, plamo etc: 65-85%
DVD/Bluray sales: 10-20%
Promotional activities and other licensing: 5-10% (Anime ads, characters appearing as guests in gacha games etc)
Anime Houdai, Anitere, dAnimestore and a hundred other streaming services you've never even heard of: 1-5%
Netflix, Amazon Prime 1-5%
Digital Purchases: 1-2%
TV Airing <1%
Crunchyroll & Funimation <1%

If crunchyroll and Funimation disappeared in the morning it'd make no real difference to anime creators, many would be glad to see them gone, especially when the idiots working for these sites are desperate to damage that 65-85% at the top.

So merch and DVD sales are the best ways to "support the industry"? Got it.

These people are handling Lupin and admitted that they were mad that they couldn't change a "offensive" line in their recent releases. God help us

And keep in mind that these people are supposedly big fans of Lupin that they treated every release with love and care. But then suddenly they start whining that they couldn't change offensive gay cross-dressing Nazi stereotypes.

Were they always fans, or were they saving the "worst" ones for last to gain the customers' trust they can be competent while they try to change things behind our backs?
