It’s certainly disheartening. I’ve been teaching myself to draw, with no real background in art apart from a teenage weeb phase of terrible manga drawings with no regard for anatomy, so I’m starting with the absolute basics, working towards the semi-realistic/cartoonish style often seen in fantasy art. I’m in a lot of fandoms and have a desire to express my passion for nerdy shit through the medium of drawing, but when pride flags and characters drawn darker and fatter than they should be are so ubiquitous there are so many tutorials out there on that particular style.

Most of the sources I’ve been using are from well before this shit came about, Andrew Loomis’ books are fairly timeless for instance, but I fear for when it comes time to narrow down my style to one specific one.
I literally just put my Andrew Loomis books in storage, holy shit. I didn't think anyone else knew about those!

As far as style goes, don't worry too much. It's like handwriting, you develop it unconsciously and it'll change over time naturally. Something that blew my mind was that classical art isn't necessarily the end-all be-all, but it's a set of skills for a specific type of art. Tons of art out there that's stylized beyond realism is successful (medieval art, for instance,) and even the greats of ancient Rome fudged the proportions a little to achieve a desired outcome.

I remember Snapsnogger's entry on Encyclopedia Dramatica and man, is it a trip. She tried to put her art on Concept Art (which is for advanced artists) and didn't like it when they heavily criticized her art.
Well, they were being helpful and all, but she pussied out over the "lumpy snake tail" on her intersex lamia character, Mercury.

Looking up Snapesnogger gave me such a flashback to something I didn't even know I remembered. My god, how her style was influential at the time (or maybe she was influenced by a different overall trend, I'm not sure which came first.) There was a good while on DA where everyone's art looked like that.

This faggotry reminds me of that weird Yaoi webcomic where men can become pregnant and women became obsolete.
This is not the same person that created Yaoi High, right?

I remember Snape used to get into fights with some furry named Zeriara or something. Only know her from the ED article. If Kiwi Farms was around since the 2000’s I’d bet she would’ve a decent thread.
What is she doing now? I keep hearing all this talk of her in the past tense and wonder what the hell happened to her.

Of course, that happens, sometimes shit floats, but is not something to loose sleep over. Is also nothing new, it just the usual thing with fads and decisions that come from marketing execs trying to cash in and generate some buzz based solely on whats being talked about in the short term. Seems like comics is usually the worst victim, the history of comics has a lot of weird high and lows, doesn't seem to be anything comic industry are not willing to try.

If we were in early 00s when DA was becoming big the same crowd that is making calartsy sjw cartoons today would have been making fanart and self insert anime OCs just because it was the fad back then and most people are just followers of whats hype. A bunch DA teenagers lucky enough to join the bandwagon early became massively popular on that site, enough that they got traditional press interview and stuff and some got offered some small deals to maybe make an artbook or a comic or some ad campaign but most of those then faded into obscurity pretty quick as most were amateurs to begin with, just cashing in on popular styles of the time like emo until the fad died and was no reason to invest in them. Those who kept going and kept on growing probably assimilated into a more stable field and became just like every other pro artist that wasn't e-famous in the first place, doing their freelance and studio work and focusing on improving their craft so is not worth getting demoralized over the smokes and mirrors of internet popularity contests, all roads lead to Rome.

I remember people who had like 3 million followers on DA and would only make sameface nagas or harry potter ocs that looked drawn by Dobson lol, people who took after them probably got a bit misled as to what the professional demand was, only a few luckiy ones got really popular and even less cashed in on those styles. It also reminds me also of the early wave of youtubers, those guys got super popular making grainy cellphone videos but their relevance came and went.

It can be a curse to some, a few DA famous people really had trouble adapting to career switches after they spend several years being known by everybody for only hentai fanservice of copyrighted anime characters. I personally know of one da artist older than me that i admired a lot ( not gonna namedrop) , but who really took a hit psychologically while trying to switch to a different type of work, he is doing alright but he never really shook of the DA days reputation and is still having to cash in on it as his goal projects never really took off to outshine it. I also learned from him that the "popularity --> money" conversion can be pretty shitty, it varies wildly, for every Sakimichan theres a lot more efamous artists making an usa minimum wage (which is my country is pretty high and nothing to complain about if im honest but what i mean is not exactly millionaire cash nor that much higher than what someone not popular can make)
For some reason i thought you were talking about the person who drew trans captain America and fat black Tony stark.
With the ball hands and tits..

Perhaps its too much of a blanket statement but for all the shit talking, calling other people cowards for following trends instead of what they believe in, and staunch statements of "this is what I believe and you can't change me", it's hard to believe anyone on this site doesn't have the balls to put themselves out there artist wise.

Reading through a lot of people who are posting got more disillusioned than fearing other's opinions, and I'm glad more kiwis have said "nah go for the stars" in response.

You guys remember the person who ""fixed"" that Ochako (MHA) fanart? More precisely, this one:

Well she is back with some other bad ""fixes"":

legit why is the #MHA style so ugly lmao either way, fanart of Asai from #MyHeroAcademia ! #MyHeroAcadamia #MyHeroAcademiaHeroesRising #fanart
Yeah...it's so ugly...

my take on Momo from #MHA honestly? pretty nasty that they designed a 16 year old like this. very gross and nasty. dont draw ur female teen ocs like this please!! #MyHeroAcademia ! #MyHeroAcadamia #MyHeroAcademiaHeroesRising #FanArtForKrystianWang

She also went after a notable Youtuber Creepshow Art's art and ""fixed"" it:

@SM_Creepshow here, and while im at it, i made a few critiques for ur "art". the faces r very mishapen and ur shading is hideous ur internalized misogyny is showing u roach lmao dont be so afraid to draw fat women next time
She sounds so unlikable here, it hurts. I'm not a big fan of Creepshow Art works either, her anatomy is a bit wonky at times and she has a bit of a same-face syndrome but I'll take her art over this monstrosity any day.

If I didn’t know better, I would say this person is trolling considering the borderline deliberate sloppiness of the art and how the obnoxious #ftfy captions keep contradicting themselves every other word with calling a show ugly but drawing "fanart" of it anyways or calling a female artist a roach in the same sentence she complains about internalized muh soggy knees in a way that could be almost self aware.

But alas, I do know better.

The people who fix cute girl characters into landwhales are a lot of insecure women who want everything to be like them (fat and ugly) so they can self-insert into their fiction.
If at least they were honest about it would be somewhat laughworthy. But the fact that go on about "representation" and "Not real wahmen" it's just a very shitty excuse that everyone can see through like finely polished glass.
I also could go on about body preferences and what everyone likes to draw and i really don't like the whole "you should draw X crowd" because you're bound to not satisfy everyone and you don't have any obligation to listen to those suckers.

I just shifted gears to 3d arts and feel much happier. Other people didn't affect how i feel about drawing, i took note of my location, the job market for what i wanted, my own stamina to sit for 10 hours in a dim room looking at a screen and changed paths. I'll still laugh at bad art and send job apps to art major friends in a current tough spot because i can. Bad art makes me wanna do better and not end up working retail to pay off loans.

She goes by OwlyGem these days and makes some pretty damn good art.
