I grew up in the rural Midwest and later transplanted to the swamplands and farmlands of the south and trust me, it's really common amongst rural types. All anecdotal, but it's still an uncomfortable thing when a farmer makes a joke like that with you and it's just cringe. I don't hear people joke about it really at all now that I live in a city but I generally think it's a bigger thing among rural Americans.
